Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to Discourage Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a firm stance against NFTs. The studio, which is owned by Microsoft has said that integrations of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would allow or even support.

"To ensure that Minecraft players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content , such as worlds, skins, personal items, or other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," Mojang said.

Mojang claims that a few companies have developed "NFT Implementations that go along with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could potentially earn NFTs through playing on a server or through earning NFTs outside of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that these practices encourage digital exclusion and scarcity, which goes against Minecraft's core values. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a semblance of the haves and have-nots," the studio said. Mojang goes even further by declaring that the speculative character of NFTs "encourages profiteering."

I strongly encourage you to read the entire blog post as it concisely spells out the many criticisms of NFTs and blockchain projects in a way that's simple to comprehend. (There are many more quotes that I could include.

Valve has also taken a the hard line against blockchain games and NFTs on Steam, and much of gamers have disapproved of NFTs and NFTs, including Ubisoft stopping making NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint just a few months after launching the initiative. Epic Games said last year it's "open" to blockchain games on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain-based game was added to the store in June.

Mojang does not completely rule out the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology into the future. However, it does state that it does not have plans to integrate blockchain technology in Minecraft currently.
