On his trip to the new world, Columbus endured many trials. Only three days into the journey, and they were having issues with one of the boats. The Pinta's rudder was broke, making the boat disabled. Luckily the captain on the ship was able to tie it up with cords until they stopped at the Canary Islands. On the same journey (first expedition) on December 24, Christmas Eve the Santa Maria, another boat crashed on the North Cost of Hispaniola. Then on his second journey Columbus went back to Hispaniola, where he left his crew that crashed the Santa Maria to build a colony, only to find it had been destroyed, and most of the men were dead. And then he founded a new colony near by. Although on his way back he visited once more to find them unorderly, and all they wanted was gold. On one of his journeys Columbus was even arrested and brought back to the kind in chains.
