Content of the article A Forum Research poll for National Post discovered that charter plans have divided public opinion nearly to the middle. 44% of respondents favored the idea while 49% were opposed and 6% are undecided.
Content of the article These numbers show a decrease in support for the charter. It was previously supported by 58% of Quebec, according to an Forum Poll conducted on Aug. 24 in 2012.
According to the poll, 32% of people want the ban on conspicuous religious symbols, such as burkas and turbans, to be extended to private sector companies such as taxi drivers and servers.
While 75% of respondents agreed that immigration made the province "strong," half of Quebecers disapproved of multiculturalism, calling for new immigrants in the province to leave their customs and attire in an attempt to become "more like Quebecers." Just less than half of respondents agreed the view that multiculturalism can cause tension, and nearly four-in-10 said that Quebec should only accept immigrants from countries that speak French.
Article content "All Canadians know that francophone Quebeckers are viewed as a minority linguistic group on an English-speaking continent," Lorne Bozinoff, Forum President, said in an announcement. "But the levels of xenophobia seen in these findings, particularly in rural Quebec, is truly troubling."
A second Forum poll suggests that the charter's support could not translate into gains for the political system or the PQ.
It also found that support for Liberals has increased to 42 percent in the province, which is an increase by more than 10 percentage points from the election of 2012. The gains could be enough to propel the Liberals to an "hair thin" majority according to the poll.
According to the survey, 35 percent of Quebecois support are present. With 12% support, Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) came in third.
The poll revealed that 87% of voters who are not French support content from articles.
The poll found that if results were projected to seat the province's National Assembly (125-seat), the Liberals would "be in the position of capturing the majority of one seat." According to the results the Parti Quebecois, which currently is a minority government could lose just one seat. This means that the majority of Liberals gains are from former CAQ supporters. CAQ was able to win 19 seats in the 2012 election however, the poll results suggested that the third-party could only win four seats "if the election were to be held today."
The polls were conducted with 1,179 Quebeckers who are at least 20 years old and are believed to be accurate by a margin of +/-3% 19 times out. The results, which were released on Saturday, were released on the same day as thousands of protesters marched through downtown Montreal, calling on Premier Pauline Marois to spike the proposed charter that would ban public sector employees from wearing visible religious symbols.
According to the poll, Ms. Marois's rating of approval is just over 30%.
