Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront Using Minecraft

Dundee students design city waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school pupils have put forward their designs for the future of the city's waterfront, using the game Minecraft.

Primary school students have played the game for a few months to plan for the area which is currently undergoing the PS1bn renewal.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee was the main sponsors of the project.

The appearance of the plans was considered and so was the support for tourism education and job creation.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp which involves primary 6 and seven students from across the city, students from nine secondary schools have been taking part in similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

Pupils worked in groups using XBox and Playstation consoles that were equipped with the game, and connected to whiteboards in classrooms developing their visions and reimagining them of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson of Dundee University's school of education claimed that the game was a "huge phenomenon" that enticed children.

He stated that "We must be aware of the digital spaces children use and how they can influence their learning."

"If we want to involve children in topics like environmental design and design, then games and applications such as this are a great tool.

"The children who have been working with over the past months have been extremely enthusiastic and have created an impressive amount of work. Some of it might be a challenge for the city planners but of course that is the wonder of Minecraft that they can make anything."

Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from all over the world to take part in the Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles, to discuss how Minecraft can be best employed in both informal and formal learning.
