A Castle on Oregon's Coast
Oregon's coastline has lots of secrets: veiled surprises and satisfaction, clandestine, deserted beaches and hidden gems peppering the towns in the form of accommodations or eateries.
But possibly the most spectacular trick on all of Oregon's coast lies just beyond the art and culture capital of Cannon Beach, on the north coast. There's a castle a bit south of town, concealed behind the walls of trees simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. You can become king and queen here, at this insanely romantic area that resembles something in between the Bavarian castle that inspired Disneyland's signature structure and the Oregon ski lodge featured in "The Shining."
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is a impressive and elegant building and construction peppered with artistic details, including 7 striking guestrooms filled with antiques, lovely home furnishings and a sense of the Victorian fused with contemporary grace.
On one particular night in April, I come to St. Bernard's near 8:30 p.m., and it's pitch black. 구글 네이버 I've been here prior to a couple of times and seen little bits of it, but for the first time I park in back, finding the lovely strings of lights in the garden and on the walls, along with the 2 deer figures made of light bulbs. I stop to look and look at these, and at the archway going through the structure, half expecting to see a member of some royal family appear in a carriage and be ushered out by some servant.
Inside the enormous front door, owner Barbara Dau welcomes me in and up the snaking, stone staircase into the living room. Here, chandeliers and classy furniture populate the location, with a nifty little rounded nook in one corner - clearly part of the "tower." In the early evenings, Barbara hosts "social hours" for the visitors here, featuring white wine and friendship in front of the fireplace.
I get here far too late for this, naturally, however Barbara informs me these can sometimes be vibrant and fun-packed, while at other times none of the visitors show up at all. It's a no-pressure occasion, and with amazing beaches simply a block away - who can blame them? Just across the street are the pristine, immaculate sands of Arch Cape, a small unincorporated neighborhood which consists of one shop and a smattering of houses. In front of it sits a gorgeous stretch of beach that runs for miles to the north, while instantly to the south hovers a craggy basalt cliff, where access to a wild and unusual rocky cove is occasionally given by low tides.
The spaces at St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast are jaw dropping - at the very least. The "Ginger" ($179) features blue and white fabrics, oriental ginger containers and a love seat, with an economy size bed from Austria. In "Gaugin" ($169) there's a comfortable window seat, a cool bathtub, muted pastels of a queen and the artist size bed. The sensational "Heather" ($189) is on the top flooring and features a private deck, vaulted ceilings and a sitting location with a love seat. The "Parisian" ($149) comes with soothing, hand painted floral wallpaper, a window seat, a wingback chair, and has a Victorian ambiance. The gorgeous "Tower" remains in the tower and it's huge ($209), with a sitting area, large soaking tub, numerous antiques, and it's draped in dreamy white lace. The "Provence" ($209) is on the garden level and is sequestered away from the rest of this small palace, with terra cotta floorings, Jacuzzi and French doors opening into a private patio.
My room was the "Tapestry" ($209), with an incredible economy size bed, engaging tapestries on the wall and flooring, a big French armoire, and massive soaking tub that shrieks honeymoon hangout. There's a curious little reading nook with a stained glass ceiling, and the TV comes encased in an adorable reproduction of a castle.
At night, the ocean was the only noise you heard: relaxing and soothing beyond belief.
In the early morning, I discover the window (paradoxically) gazes straight out to a view of Castle Rock - simply offshore from Arch Cape.
Morning likewise indicates a luscious, premium, house cooked meal prepared by Dau herself. Dau was a chemist in her previous life in Chicago, and joked that meal making should be an extension of that part of chemists that like to prepare things. (Given this castle vibe, I laugh to myself and picture her in a laboratory coat, cackling maniacally as she whips up a meal while lighting thunders all around).
Guests sit together in the beautiful atrium-like dining room, where they chat and get to understand each other. I sat with a young couple from Portland and another older couple from Michigan who have actually been regulars given that the place began in 1995. In truth, they were among the very first guests in its very first 2 weeks.
These many, remarkable amenities, St. Bernard's offers present certificates. Dau also uses wedding plans that accommodate as much as 60 people and her signature, wondrous cooking.
Other alluring components of this location include more secret beaches just to the south and north. A couple of miles north, you'll find the enchanting Hug Point, which is packed with odd and intriguing geologic formations like funky sea caves, a waterfall and different shapes and fractures in the cliffs. Its most interesting landmark is a portion of roadway blasted out of a basalt promontory - a remnant of when the beaches were the only genuine highway the coastal area had, back around 1910. You can even see the leftovers of a traffic control embedded in the rock. In Cannon Beach, you'll discover a substantial variety of high end restaurants that are legendary, in addition to some Lewis & Clark landmarks.
