App Helps Children Lie to their Parents by Masking Pictures with Calculator

Parents are generally happy to see their child develop an interest in maths. Beware of a devious mobile phone app that appears to be a calculator but in fact hides secret pictures.



By entering a four-digit code children are able to unlock a vault of images and videos they have stored in the app.

One reviewer commented: "This simple little app is awe-inspiring. Looks like a calculator. It acts like it's a calculator. It's Fort Knox disguised, keeping your personal data completely secret.



Last night, Durham Police warned parents about the app after they confirmed that it was part of an ongoing investigation.



A spokesperson for Calculator told The Mail Sunday that the app is essentially an album hidden from view that children can access in order to hide their videos or photos from their parents. The icon looks like a calculator and hides the photos from view.



We would advise parents to be vigilant and dissuade their children from using this app.'

The police force has not commented on the specifics of the investigation. However, a web safety expert warned that such apps could be used by children to conceal and exchange sexual images - called sexting.



April Requard stated: "I've heard parents tell me how their children stumbled across their calculator app on their phones and realized that they were hiding photos that parents were horrified by the photos their children had taken."



"This is an app I hope no child would use on their phone.'



NSPCC stated that parents should have regular conversations about online safety with their children . They should be aware of the apps they use.



"What's most important is that children are aware of the risks of sexting, and they feel able to talk to an adult they trust if they receive any sexual images or are asked to send them.'



Digital Mind Co Ltd, the company responsible for the app, was unable to be reached for comment.
