Minecraft Says 'No' To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the uber-popular Minecraft is taking a page from the old U.S. anti-drugs playbook, however it appears "Just Say No" works much better for money-making schemes based on blockchain than it did for drugs.

The blog of the studio that is owned by Microsoft announced on Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft were "generally not something we'd accept and support." The blog also stated that it was updating its Minecraft Usage Guides to clarify that blockchain technology cannot be integrated in the Minecraft client. Additionally, NFTs made from content in the game (e.g skins, items and mods) cannot be used to generate NFTs.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's notion of digital ownership is based on "scarcity and exclusion" which "does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together." Ayakanihei They added that third-party NFTs could cost players who buy them, since they depend on people who are creating blockchain technology "who might disappear without notice."

This actually did happen. Blockverse was an NFT project supposedly designed for Minecraft, concocted an estimated $1.2million from investors who purchased Blockverse characters in NFT format on websites like OpenSeas. The project also had the cryptocurrency $Diamond. In January, the project's creators suddenly took all the money invested and wiped out the project's website, Discord, and Twitter account. This is commonly referred to as a "rug pull" and is very frequent in the crypto world.

Although the Minecraft developers left the door open for blockchain tech to be added in the near future but they also stated that they don't have plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft right now.

It is likely that projects that had been working to integrate Minecraft into the blockchain were not as enthusiastic about the announcement. NFT Worlds, a company which uses blockchain to enable users to purchase NFTs for their Minecraft, a digital world, was hit hard. The company posted an Discord message on its Twitter account, stating that they were working on solutions "around the Minecraft EULA changes," adding they were considering a possible change to their Minecraft-like game platform.

Despite the game being almost 13 years old, 141 million active players still come back to Minecraft each month, as of August 2021 numbers from Statista. In a 2018 interview, Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft studio, revealed that Minecraft players were averagely 24 years old. However, the game is specifically designed to be kid-friendly, Chiang said. For Minecraft players, the ERSB rating is 10 years old and above. Having a money-making investment scheme built into the client does bring up a number of concerns and could lead to abuse, especially when you make children vulnerable. Edge was instructed by Chiang that "We need be very clear and simple about how we intend to making money in the game."

Meanwhile, other games specifically designed for kids like Roblox have all-in on monetization and promotions in-game targeted at children. Roblux is used to incentivize gamers to spend Roblux in-game to purchase items as they explore worlds specifically designed to promote brands like Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. Still, the company behind the game has updated its community standards in the past year to take an approach to the possibility of using NFTs within the game. Users, they said, are not permitted to make use of Roblox to accept payment for acting as a model for assets.
