Makeup Vlogger and influencer James Charles has had his YouTube channel removed from monetization due to an alleged sexting scandal.
YouTube confirmed to Insider that Charles was removed temporarily from the Partner Program. This allows creators to earn money from YouTube directly. The Google-owned video site is said to have used its "creator responsibility policy" which states that creators could be penalized for, among other actions, "[p]articipating in abuse or violence, showing brutality, or engaging in fraudulent/deceptive behavior leading to actual harm".
Mashable has reached out to YouTube for clarification on the length and nature of Charles the suspension. Mashable has also called Charles representatives to get their input.
Charles, 21 years old, has been the subject numerous allegations from a variety of people over the past few years. This included two 16-year-old boys, who exchanged direct messages with Charles that were sexually explicit. In an apology video, titled "holding me accountable", Charles claimed that the messages were genuine and that he was misled into believing that the boys were 18. (While it's not known which specific individuals he's referring to, a former accuser who claimed to Insider that he's 16 denied ever asserting to be 18 in his alleged conversations with Charles.)
Some of the allegations date back to 2019, when Charles' friend and fellow beauty YouTuber Tati Westbrook publicly severed ties with him in a controversial video called "BYE SISTER". As well as personal grievances, Westbrook also alluded to numerous instances where Charles attempted to "manipulate" men, describing some of them as "emerging into adulthood" In the wake of the video, other fans and members of the larger "beauTube" community posted clips of Charles talking about hitting straight men.

Charles his most recent statement on the allegations against him was posted to his Twitter account on Saturday. In it, he said that while he "took accountability" for his messages to teenagers, "many other people have come forward with a number of misleading stories and false allegations" in the wake of his apology video.
Charles isn't the only YouTube celebrity to be pulled from the Partner Program over real-world allegations. David Dobrik, the key figure in the highly successful Vlog Squad, was demonetized in the last month following allegations of misconduct and assault against other members of the group. The allegations are believed to have occurred during VS production shoots.
