Minecraft Dungeons Review - Hours of Fun For Locked-down Families

Minecraft Dungeons review - hours of fun for families locked down

Mojang Studios; Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One (version tested)

Retro-themed hack-and-slash, this spinoff of Mojang has lots of Mojang's characters.

Mojang Studios must have had some ideas when they first considered the idea of making a Minecraft spinoff. Dungeon crawlers were one of the first ideas. The genre has offered numerous subterranean caves as well as treasure chests, warrior skeletons, and other beloved Minecraft elements, from Gauntlet to Diablo. The blocky images are well-designed and will make Minecraft Dungeons look familiar to fans. They'll be moving through dioramas full of hack-and-slash-themed fun, and they will rearrange each time you play.

The plot is thin: a vicious person finds a treasure which transforms him into a powerful mage, who then starts the reign of terror over the Minecraft kingdom. You can play the game on your own but it's much more fun to play as a team. This can be played either online or via console. This mode lets players collaborate to defeat waves of slime monsters, giant spiders, and skeletons. Also, they must revive their fallen friends. The screen is soon flooded with light effects, which include lightning bolts, arrows lightning bolts, freeze rays, and more. There are four players playing this game. As Gauntlet veterans will recall the hidden rhythms of the genre that are so enjoyable; the anticipation of the next wave of enemies, the anarchy of battle, and finally the sweet gluttony of loot.

Fighting can be a bit nimble. There's a button for melee attacks, and one for ranged weapons. It starts with a simple bow and sword and then you can unlock more powerful weapons, such as spears, battle hammers, and rapid-fire crossbows. Enchantments can be earned for your weapons to give them new abilities like lightning strike or poison cloud. Artefacts and armor equip players with their own unique capabilities, from lasers to healing auras. The generous cornucopia of options for attacking and defensive adds a rich layer of strategy and planning to the chaos of the levels.

Minecraft Dungeons is a thrilling adventure in dungeons that takes you from your first encounter with the cute archer who is skeletal to your final fight against the Arch Illager. The levels are full of details, from lush pixelated woodlands to deep red stone caverns that clattering mine carts rush through the narrow tunnels and torches flicker on craggy walls. There is a direct path to the finish on each level, but there are many side routes. Also, horror film music and necromancers that generate zombies accompany the bosses as well as villains.

Minecraft Dungeons is alive and well with an exciting, varied soundtrack with theatrical sound effects and a myriad of references to the beginning of Minecraft. If you can't find the baby zombies running at you with arms outstretched or the keychains that anthropomorphize the dungeons escaping in terror, then consult a wizard.

Minecraft Dungeons isn't exactly an epic challenge. You'll be able to complete a basic run-through in just an evening, but the increasing difficulty levels will reveal ever more powerful and exciting weapons and items. The levels are partially random so they don't always look the same each time you return. This enhances the replay value. Some players will be disappointed that the map of the game has an unusable area that will be available to purchase later on.

It's also disappointing that the game doesn't place as much importance on the player's imagination. In between each level, you go back to your training camp to buy new items and test new weapons. It would be nice to able build your own castle there. Minecraft Dungeons, a retro-tinted hack-and-slash action packed with Mojang humor and personality, is an excellent way to have hours of fun with your family.
