It seems that the gaming industry is just as susceptible to synchronicity than any other creative pursuit. In a single moment, everyone has come to the same conclusion that the time is finally right for digital collectible games. While we used to be limited to the enclosed gardens of the annual Magic: The Gathering videogames, today among the many Kickstarters, we also have Scrolls, the next game by Minecraft studio Mojang, and Hearthstone is a collectible card game by Blizzard.



Hearthstone is a free-to-play card game that is based on the wildly popular Warcraft universe. The concept behind the game is that heroes will join forces in one of the many worlds of Warcraft to relax and engage in friendly contests. The game shares World of Warcraft's vibrant colors and slightly cartoonish style. Players choose from nine different heroes or decks, all is based on the classes from World of Warcraft, and each with a corresponding kind of gameplay.

Each player receives a hand of cards that include creatures, items, and spells. They are all inspired by the Warcraft universe. Players are able to play these cards based on their casting value and mana crystals. Contrary to the other card games that collectors and players might be familiar with, Hearthstone deemphasises resource management. Instead, players will receive one more mana crystal per round, and it replenishes each round.



Each class comes with an individual ability that each player can utilize or cast each turn. For instance the warlock has a life tap, which allows the player to trade two health for a different card, while the priest can simply cast +2 health on any of his creatures or himself. Heroes can also carry weapons to take on their adversaries directly.



Players aren't able to designate an opponent to block an attacking unit. Creatures that have Taunt must be killed and attacked first; otherwise it's an open-for-all. Creatures are able to ignore creatures of an opponent and strike them directly. This significantly increases the speed at the speed at which a Hearthstone hand can be played.



All in all, it means Hearthstone is easy to learn and understand and is also rapidly growing.



While Hearthstone's gameplay may be unique, it differs from other digital or digitised game of cards that are collectible in that it is unique in its features. Its greatest strengths are in card accumulation, deck building, and creation. You can participate in daily quests that award you booster packs. Or, you can purchase these booster packs.



Hearthstone was created to recreate the feeling of anticipation that comes from opening the pack of boosters. Each pack includes an assortment of random cards. However it is guaranteed that players will get at least one rare card or better.



All cards can be disenchanted to make new and more powerful cards for a deck they're building. It's a clever innovation that fits in perfectly with the Warcraft universe, and is only possible in a fully digital card game.



It's easy to lose track of your time playing Hearthstone. The simple aesthetic and straightforward rule set makes Hearthstone less intimidating than other games that are collectible, but it also conceals the real strategic depth. Anyone who has played StarCraft II will also recognise the fact that Blizzard's matchmaking tools on Battle.net are now second-to-none and, once the game launches it's highly unlikely that players will be matched against opponents they don't have a fighting chance against. The most appealing aspect of Hearthstone is its booster pack system, deck-building and crafting. This package could be an advantage over the rest.



Hearthstone will be coming to PC and Mac in the near future, and later to iPad at a later date.
