Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a brand new action-adventure game, Minecraft Legends. The title, which is due to launch in 2023, requires players to explore the Minecraft world while it's being invaded by an evil force.
Mojang studios, part of Microsoft, which makes Minecraft the game, described the new game as a familiar and in many ways-new experience that focuses more on strategy and battle. The original Minecraft game, released in 2011, requires players to create and explore, while occasionally fighting against zombie-like creatures.
"You are the center of every battle you lead, fighting alongside your allies while giving them directions," Microsoft said, in an announcement that teased the game. Microsoft announced that it had partnered with Blackbird Interactive who also developed the space strategy game Homeworld3.
Minecraft Legends is not a well-known game. However it doesn't guarantee success. Minecraft is a wildly popular video game, right up with Super Mario Bros., Grand Theft Auto and Tetris. However, its efforts to expand beyond that formula have been spotty.
According to Metacritic, Minecraft Dungeons was an action-adventure video game that mimics the Minecraft style. It received mixed reviews two years ago. GameSpot also a CNET corporate partner has given Minecraft Dungeons an "good" rating. GameSpot noted that Minecraft Dungeons was primarily focused on fighting monsters, rather than providing a new twist on its basic formula of building worlds. GameSpot's Steve Watts stated that the game is not changing our expectations of what games could be. Instead, it's betting upon its own popularity.

Microsoft unveiled Minecraft Legends during its annual summer videogame show which will take place online this year. The game will made available in the coming year for Xbox, PC and cloud gaming.
