The Minecraft giant shows no signs of slowing down. Developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms including PCs, Macs consoles, mobile, and PCs. Around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day since the beginning. The game keeps people hooked too -- more than 40 million users boot up the Minecraft world every month and tinker around with a blocky shovel, axe and sword. Other than Tetris, very few games have even come close to achieving the 100 million number.
The game's open-ended structure and unlimited potential as well as its success are key factors to its success. Players can construct whatever they want as long as the outward-facing geometry is composed of colorful, simple blocks. Many players continue to play for a long time even though they're old. Mojang has supported the game by releasing regular updates that include new mechanics as well as creatures and materials. Its versatility has made it a favorite in the classroom, where it can be used to teach science, art and even coding.
Many wondered what Microsoft was thinking of for Mojang when it bought the company almost two years ago. A sequel? Perhaps an exclusive to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? Nothing has worked out. Minecraft is now accessible on more platforms than ever before and there's been no mention of the possibility of a Minecraft 2. Instead we've got an HoloLens Minecraft version that is a spin-off of the adventure series from Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will eventually result in a brand new educational-focused Minecraft. Soon, there will be an app for China.
Minecraft's popularity doesn't show any signs of diminishing. Minecraft skins Minecraft's strength is not its finite storyline or stunning graphics. It has a seemingly timeless appeal that draws new youngsters as they grow old enough to play it. As long as this continues, Minecraft will continue to sell out in a staggering amount.
