Article content The Arthur Avenue Retail Market is a must-see on any visit to the region. The indoor market is home to a cigar shop where cigars are made by hand, a produce shop and Mike's Deli. It is a favorite destination for celebrities and politicians. In the beginning of April, Ohio Gov. John Kasich was photographed at Mike's eating sandwiches and a few servings of spaghetti while stumping for votes in the New York Republican presidential primary. A scrapbook on display in the deli showcases photos of other famous visitors such as Robert DeNiro and Hillary Clinton - chowing down and posing with huge chunks of cheese and whole salamis.



David Greco, whose father founded Mike's Deli recommends the Michelangelo sheo, with prosciutto, and heavenly fresh mozzarella as one of the most delicious items on the menu. Be sure to keep the seeded top of the sandwich roll facing upwards. If you don't, Greco will come over and say, "Your bread's upside down. It's bad luck.

It asserts that it has a larger and more active Italian American community than Manhattan's Little Italy which has shrunk to just the size of a few blocks over the last decades.



But while the Italian flavor of Belmont's culture and stores remains strong, the number of Italian-American families has declined over time. Today the mix of residents includes Latinos, Albanians, and students from nearby Fordham University. Yet you can still find old women chatting in Italian in the back row of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with columns of marble, stained glass windows and statues of the Madonna.



And while it's not unusual to see tourists and foodies such as those from Italy - on Arthur Avenue, there's a particular kind of shopper Greco loves the most. He says that his favorite customers are grandmothers.
