Qipao Dress
Qipao dresses are one of the oldest Chinese clothes. This style is extremely popular with all ages of women. Qipaos are made of silk or cotton. The fabric is very soft and comfortable. Cotton is also very durable and economical. The color can fade, however. To preserve the beauty of a silk qipao, it must be dried cleaned.

The qipao originally belonged to Manchus who ruled China throughout the centuries. These robes are loose and long. They had slits on the sides which made them more comfortable for horses. Later, the qipao got shorter and more fitted. This gave it a feminine, modern look.

Its current version is associated to the Women's Liberation Movement (China). Its revival in Mainland China is due to the rise of gender equality. The qipao has become a key part of the modern woman's wardrobe. A qipao today is the first choice for Chinese brides when it comes to their wedding day.

Qipaos, which were worn by the elite and working class women as a symbol to femininity, are known for their symbolic significance. In the 1920s, a shorter Qipao was popular. Qipaos came in many different sizes, colours, and styles by the 1940s.

One of the most famous qipaos, the cheongsam, is one of my favorites. It can be classified as Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, or Hong Kong style. Each has its own unique characteristics. Cheongsams mainly consist of cotton, which is both breathable and strong. Silk is also known for it's soft texture. Cotton is a good option for casual qipao. Cotton can be machine washed and is affordable.

During the early days in the Republic, most qipaos had cool dyes. The collar was fastened by a knotted button. The foot binding was removed after that. There were many embellishments, such as gemstones and floral embroidery.

Grace Kelly, Nancy Kwan, and Nancy Kwan are some of the most prominent qipaos. The cheongsams were also worn by other Asian stars like Katy Perry and Elizabeth Taylor.

Despite changes in the economy and social upheavals throughout the country, the qipaos are still popular. In fact, qipaos is now considered a standard garment for Chinese-Americans. While some Chinese Americans have been offended by the appropriation qipaos, other Chinese-Americans are more sensitive.

After the 1919 fall the Qing Dynasty, China's people opened their doors to the world. The introduction of foreigners provided new ideas. Qipaos initially served as a political statement. Although some women wore Qipaos to formal events, others wore them all day.

The popularity of qipao declined when the communist revolution of 1949 swept through China. Many blamed Western influences. The qipao is still very popular in Hong Kong or Taiwan. The uniform was adopted by flight attendants as the qipao. Similar to western countries, qipaos were also sold on the runways. Qipaos changed over time to fit different events like proms.

The late 1990s saw a lot more experimentation with Qipao styles. Qipao Dress and designers were accused in the theft of the qipao. Jean Paul Gaultier (designer), H&M (brand) and Reformation are all accused of using the qipao designs as inspiration for their fashion collections.
