Minecraft Player Spends two Years Creating A Virtual City

Minecraft player works for two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years creating a virtual world he has named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is constructed out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took him two years to build and that he works at least five hours per week working on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual version of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to perfect.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

He told the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A lot of people think that it's a sport for recreation but it's not."

He initially built the city using the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction options.

Mr. Parcells plans to add an airport as well as a sports arena.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet for architecture and energy."

"Architecture has always been something that I have loved. I'm most proud of more traditional designs, and the more Victorian, art deco designs.

"A lot of people drop in to explore the area or help in the construction." Many of them are involved in helping build roads.

Although Titan City has been welcomed by all who have visited it However, Mr Parcells stated that he has kept his virtual world apart from his real life.

He added, "I've kept this under wraps. It's sort of like a parallel existence that I'm not able to talk about but people are beginning to find out."

"My parents think it's cool. I'm sure they're content that I don't play it all the time."

Microsoft recently signed an agreement to acquire Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game registered its 100 millionth user in February 2014, the game's creator Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.

After the initial purchase of the game Minecraft is completely free to play however there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.

The game takes place in a virtual universe composed of cubes of various materials. Nearly all of them can be used as building blocks, and a few of them can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond and so on.).

The game demands you to survive by using blocks to build shelters and turn raw materials and mixtures of them into useful items (swords and armour, bows and bows, etc.) to beat the various monsters in the game.
