Making Minecraft and Mods on Steam Deck is Nice and Simple

Are you looking to get Minecraft running smoothly on Steam Deck or a standard Linux desktop with minimal effort? This is one method to achieve this and it's extremely simple. I've chosen the PolyMC launcher (a variant of MultiMC) available on Flathub, as the current official Minecraft launcher Flatpak does not save your password on Steam Deck and PolyMC of course supports modding too.

Here's a recent video guide for you, along with the steps in text below:

This video is also available on the Steam Deck section of the PolyMC Wiki!

Text steps

- Install PolyMC via the Discover Software Centre on Steam Deck or Flathub directly for desktop Linux. - Launch PolyMC and then add your account to the upper right corner. It supports Mojang as well as Microsoft logins. - Open the main PolyMC Settings and click Minecraft in the left pane. Select the option to close PolyMC when the game window is opened. If you do not then the Steam Deck will blink between the two windows when you load in Game Mode/ Deck UI. Make sure that Java is up-to-date in PolyMC Settings. This is required for the latest version of Minecraft. minecraft servers Click Add Instance at the top left. Next, choose normal Minecraft or mods that have built-in search. It will install everything you require. - To be able to launch directly from Steam: go to the Games menu at the top, then click add a Non-Steam game and then find PolyMC in the list of games.

Some YouTube comments suggested trying out modpacks with optimized performance however, I really didn't notice a significant difference in terms of performance or power consumption to justify it on Deck as compared to vanilla Minecraft when testing on the same map seed. Mods for the controller were also suggested, however they're rarely updated and usually only compatible with specific Minecraft versions, so sticking to Steam Input and just adjusting only a few keys is the best choice for this. Update: How to get Steam Deck and Gamepad controls in Minecraft.
