World of Warcraft Classic beta launches on May 15th, with full release August 27

15th Anniversary Collector's Edition is also scheduled to be released later this year.



Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft Classic - the long-awaited reboot of the game that turns back the clock 13 years - will be available on August 27, but current WoW players will have the chance (and take note that it's only an opportunity) to beta test it long before then, starting at the beginning of tomorrow.



The Classic version brings the game back to the August 2006 "Drums of War Update (patch 1.12) However, it keeps many of the bells and whistles that the current MMO has to offer.

You can enjoy the retro reboot at no cost if you sign up to World of Warcraft. Also you'll get the chance to join the closed beta test that begins on the 15th of May (May 15). You'll need to register your interest here (opens new tab) and hope to be selected.

Blizzard mentions that even if you do not get into the beta early, there will be stress tests throughout the summer, with increasing numbers of participants.



As we've heard in the past, part of the concept behind WoW Classic is to make things tougher, just as it was back in the day, with the aim of encouraging greater levels of social interaction to deal with those difficulties.





Collector's Edition

Classic will be released as part of the 15-year celebration of WoW. Blizzard will also release the World of Warcraft 15th anniversary Collector's Edition on October 8. The edition will retail for around $115 or AU$170.



It comes with the usual in-game bonuses and a variety of collectibles like statues of Ragnaros the Firelord ('by fire be purified!')!') and a mouse mat that sports an Azeroth map Azeroth, among other goodies.



A WoW event will take place in-game. It will feature an event with 25 players, featuring renowned bosses, with the chance for players to win an Obsidian Worldbreaker mount.
