Once You've Installed NetBSD

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail that keeps Java and other dependencies in one place. Although I haven’t tested it, the theory is that you can run the server anywhere Java supports, which includes Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.

I could not let go of it! The good news is that you are able to run a Minecraft server on your other favorite OS. This article will explain the method I used however I'm sure there are other options.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD, set up networking and enabled the pkgin feature, you will require an OpenJDK to run Minecraft.

OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most up-to-date version as of July 20,22. You can search to determine that this is still the case:

If you're 16 years old, you can still pull the current packages by opening the repo file.

and changing the repo URI, in my instance, from 9.0 to 9.0_current:

Thank you so much to Ryoon@ for their work on this. Secure Content He has done a lot of great work for the NetBSD community. I feel like I owe him a coffee or a beer next time I'm able to visit Japan.

Now we can install, together with other useful tools:

Running Minecraft

This location can be used to run Minecraft as a Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one location:

Log in as my local user to begin:

We can now start!

Java will throw an exception regarding a system that is not supported, which NetBSD users know well. It's safe to ignore from my experience.

Don't forget to sign the EULA after you run the server for the first time:

Creating the launch script

I like to symlink the latest version of the server to minecraft.jar:

Then reference it in launch.sh using tmux to keep the server after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory as well:

We're now ready to go!

Follow-up

The next step would be creating an appropriate chroot environment to work with Java and Minecraft similar to the way I use FreeBSD jails. I have an NetBSD Chroot Exploration article in the process for a number of years. I'll clean it up and release it in the near future.
