Conservatives are increasingly using the slogan "Let’s Go Brandon" as a political motto. It has been used in high-profile Republican positions such as Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. It is now so common that it has inspired a hit rap song.
"Let’s Go Brandon" began as a chant in a NASCAR race live broadcast. It was first mentioned by Brandon Brown, NASCAR's driver, during a live interview at Talladega Motor Speedway in Alabama's 2021 Sparks300 race.
Kelli Statavast, a reporter who was interviewing Brandon at the time, noticed that the crowd behind him was shouting something that was difficult to comprehend. Stavast misheard what the crowd was singing and assumed it was Brandon cheering.
However, after the mistake was publicized, the phrase was immediately associated with an anti Joe Biden message. The phrase has also become a popular rallying cry among conservatives over the past few months.
The "Let’s Go Brandon" campaign has since spread outside of Congress. The slogan has been adopted by former President Trump's campaign PAC and Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Conservative commentary has made Let's go Brandon a standard feature. It is often attached to images of skyrocketing gasoline prices. It has become a rap hit and is now the number one song on iTunes.
NBC News requested comment from the White House, despite widespread usage of the slogan. However, it's being used by high-profile Republicans. It is currently being considered a PG rated version for Talladega, which contains expletive-laced chants.
Stavast failed to respond to reports on the incident. She also didn't confirm whether the crowd was correct. Southwest Airlines is investigating the pilot for allegedly using the phrase.
Let's Go Brandon has been a big success, and it even caught the eye of Vice President Joe Biden. However, it is uncertain how long it'll be around.
