You're walking down the streets of Japan, looking for a few bargains on the local sushi. Anime advertisements surround you as you enter the food district of the local market. You hear the faint whooshing of the airplanes as people shove one way or another, hurrying to the different stalls. Suddenly, someone cries out to look to the sky. Above you is not an airplane, but a missile-like object heading in your path. You run away, but with no avail.
This atomic bomb was the first of the two ever known to be used in history. It was developed by a group of about 100,000 scientists working on a project known as the 'Manhattan Project.'
In 1945, the Allied Forces had already forced all of the Axis Powers to surrender except for Japan. By this time, the already spent soldiers were bleary from fighting for four years and desperate to go back home. Americans were growing anxious and impatient and wanted the war to end. These all might've been reasons why President Harry Truman decided to drop the bombs.
As soon as this bomb, dubbed 'Little Boy,' hits the ground, it will annihilate 80,000 Japanese civilians. Then, on August 9th, 'Fat Man' will strike the village of Nagasaki, killing about 66,000 more denizens. But Death will be claiming more lives as the radioactive materials found in the bombs begin to torture those close enough to the explosion into agonizingly slow deaths. A recount from survivor Akihiro Takahashi was translated and revealed to the public as follows:
“Then the wind from the atomic bomb affected an area with a radius of 16 kilometers. At the moment of the explosion, the shock wave spread and was followed by a wind that reached 440 meters per second. Even the most powerful typhoon to hit Japan had a speed of only 82 meters per second. I myself was blown 10 meters by the blast, and the wind caused skin to peel off, eyes to pop out, and intestines to be blown out of the stomach. I myself lost the skin on my arm, and it dangled down from my fingers.”
Many scientists, including Albert Einstein, regret having taking part in this weapon of mass destruction. Others forget it or dismiss the topic when asked about their roles. However, America cannot.
Plenty of evidence has been found to suggest that ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’ were dropped for reasons other than ‘saving lives’. Originally the cities to be bombed were Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kokura. Kyoto was later switched with Nagasaki since the USA wanted to test whether plutonium or uranium would be better for further bombings and Kyoto was already destroyed. Another bomb was planning to be positioned on Tokoyo on August 19th, had Japan not surrendered earlier.
Many historians are still debating whether or not Truman should've dropped the bomb. Others argue that he dropped it on mere civilians, not on the military bases, therefore killing more than he needed to. Some say that he did it to prove to the USSR the might of the USA's forces. Debates have struck out by saying that Japan was going to surrender and that it was only a matter of pride. People defend that if the bombs had not been used then the war would have been even more bloody and lengthy than ever.
I personally wish that the bombs hadn't been dropped due to both the amount of lives taken and because of the environmental issues now caused by 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man'.
As said in The Guardian, "According to the research, tens of millions of people would die, global temperatures would crash and most of the world would be unable to grow crops for more than five years after a conflict.

In addition, the ozone layer, which protects the surface of the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, would be depleted by 40% over many inhabited areas and up to 70% at the poles."

The dropping of these weapons have given America an even more tainted name than we could've realized.
