The Good News Is

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail that keeps Java and other dependencies in a separate location. It is possible to run the server from any device that supports Java as well as Linux and perhaps NetBSD however I haven't tested the latter.

I decided to keep it up! The good news is that yes, you can run a Minecraft server on my other favorite OS as well. This is the method I used. I'm sure there are more.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD and configured networking and enabled pkgin , you will require an OpenJDK installation to play Minecraft.

OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most recent snapshot as of July 2022. You can check by searching to see that this is still the case:

If it's 16 or older, you can pull current packages by opening your repo file:

and changing the repo URL, in my case 9.0 to 9.0_current

This was a fantastic project. He is a huge advocate for NetBSD I feel that he owes me at least a cup of coffee or a glass of beer each time I travel to Japan.

We are now able to install, along with other useful tools.

Running Minecraft

You can use this location to run Minecraft just like any Java-enabled server. citizensnpcs I put all my data in one place:

Log in as my local user and start:

We're ready to start!

You'll notice Java will throw an error that states "system not supported, which those of us using NetBSD know all too well. It's safe to ignore from my experience.

And don't forget to accept the EULA when you launch the server for the first time:

Create a launch script

I like to link to minecraft.jar the most recent version of the server

Then reference it in launch.sh using tmux to keep the server even after disconnecting. I also like to give Minecraft more memory:

We're ready to go!

Follow-up

Next, I'd like to build a proper Chroot environment that can support Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I have an NetBSD chroot exploration article in the works for many years. I'll clean it up and release it soon.
