Mojang's breakout hit Minecraft took second place in Google's list of the most popular YouTube search queries of 2014. It was ranked immediately behind the word "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google the word "Minecraft" was more frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than the term "movies." PewDiePie, a gaming celebrity, was also among the most searched terms on YouTube in 2014. This was due to queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for the artists Drake and Beyonce.

Google reports that user searches and engagement for gaming-related content are on the rise, even though many surveyed users aren't necessarily gamers. YouTube videos that fall under the "Gaming" category topped the top of the service's Top 10 Most Popular list on 25 different days in October of 2014.
According to the report it was revealed that the report states that a Google Consumer Survey was conducted in October 2014 with people who said they had watched gaming videos on YouTube. It revealed that only 37% of respondents thought themselves gamers. "When asked about their motivations for watching gaming videos, gamers mentioned 'entertainment' and 'humor' as often as they were asked about 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips'.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted out the reasons why people watched videos from creators like SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. Many of them replied, "Because they are hilarious!" The videos were even described as stand-up comedy. One of the game's upcoming creators summarized his enthusiasm with the following analogy: "You don't need to play soccer to be a fan of television."
