Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strongly-held position against NFTs. The studio, which is owned Microsoft and Microsoft, has stated that the integration of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they will accept or allow.
"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated within our server and client applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, personal items, or other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset," Mojang said.
According to Mojang the studio, some companies have come up with "NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files." The studio also suggests that there might be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players can earn NFTs by performing tasks in Minecraft on a server, or earning them outside of the game.
Mojang argues these practices encourage digital scarcity and exclude and is against the values of Minecraft. "NFTs are not inclusive of all of our community and create a scenario of the haves and have-nots," the studio said. Mojang goes further by declaring that the speculative character of NFTs "encourages profiteering."
I strongly encourage you to go through the blog post in its entirety, as it succinctly lays out many criticisms of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in language that's easy to understand. (There are a lot of more quotes that I could have included.)
Valve has also taken a firm stand against NFTs and blockchain-based games on Steam. The majority of the gaming community has been against NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games stated last year that it was "open" for blockchain games to be made available on the Epic Games Store. The store was the first to receive a blockchain-based game in June.
Mojang does not completely exclude the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the future. However, it states that "we don't have plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft right at this time."
