Are you all Zoomed out? How to handle Zoom fatigue over the holiday season . Back to video

--

Author: Jaigris HODSON, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Royal Roads University

Article content It's officially. The Christmas celebrations in North America and Western Europe will be quite different this year. We've been told to use online tools to share holiday cheer with our loved ones since the second pandemic wave. We may all be reluctant to attend festive gatherings in person to prevent the spread of COVID-19 before the vaccine becomes available.

Article content Unfortunately, however we've been doing everything digitally from our couches for months, and most of us are becoming bored of the whole process, with good reason.

So, do we simply forget about the holidays altogether? Or do we try to find new ways to make the holidays memorable? My research on digital literacy shows ways to connect this holiday season, even when we live in different places.

Video for everything

Zoom fever was all over the country during the initial months of this pandemic. People were also speeding to work, happy hour and board game nights and other events. There were many who felt like they hit a wall. Zoom fatigue is real. Recent research suggests that all the efforts to connect with video chat platforms (Zoom, Skype, Teams and others) might actually be wearing us out.

Article content While you consider how to spread the holiday cheer, you're trying to figure out ways to step away from everything that is done via video chat. Instead, you should learn from the ways that digital natives utilize digital communication tools and enjoy the holiday season on different platforms, as I'll outline below.

Different platforms for different social groups

My research shows that teens tend to divide their use of social media platforms by their relationships with those platforms. Teenagers utilize Snapchat to keep contact with their family and teachers and use Facebook for school. They interact with their friends in massive multiplayer games.

This kind of interaction using digital technology is a good idea for all. If you're using Zoom for work, you may want to experiment with other methods of connecting with family and friends, For example you could make use of an app like Rave, Airtime or Teleparty to stream movies in synchronization with your friends. Or , you could connect with friends and family virtually in games like Animal Crossing, World of Warcraft, or Minecraft.

Article content Get digitally creative

There are many ways to connect with your loved ones and spread joy during the holidays. The sky, and your creativity, are the limit however here are some of my favorites:

Curate and share a music playlist: Research on music sharing online has revealed that sharing music is connected to friendship. You could curate a holiday music playlist on streaming platforms like Spotify and share it with your friends this holiday season. This could bring you closer to your family and friends as you shop for food online, play games, and post holiday memes to your WhatsApp Group.

Text messages can be sent: A 2016 study from the University of Minnesota showed that text messages are perceived as being more warm and personal than emails. You can keep in touch with your beloved ones during the holiday season by sending them regular text messages. Sending gifs or emojis as your text messages can further increase your emotional connection to your loved ones.

Article content Host a virtual New Year's celebration on YouTube. A Christmas-themed ceilidh in Scotland is a Christmas tradition where families and friends gather to share stories, dance and sing songs. You can create a virtual ceilidh with those you love using a site like YouTube. Each participant can upload a video in which they sing, play a musical instrument or tell a tale. You can then organize the videos into playlists that your group can enjoy while eating their Christmas cookies. After all, research shows that YouTube is a place where communities are formed and is also a place where videos are shared.

Turn on the radio, tune in the music, and then get rid of it.

The holidays can be stressful and you will feel inclined to accept every invitation, but you also must spend time unplugging from electronic devices. If you suffer from Zoom fatigue certain universities recommend that doctoral students incorporate the time to detox from digital devices into their schedules.

Article content Sometimes, you'll really want to use Videoconferencing platforms to recreate a holiday dinner or cocktail celebration. To prevent fatigue, ensure that you balance your video chat with other ways of connecting mentioned above.

Don't forget the old-fashioned ways of keeping in touch even if you aren't using your computer. You can make calls, send cards or mail your loved ones. These moments are often the most meaningful since they are extremely rare in today's hyper-connected world.
