The barrel (symbol bl or bbl) from the Gallo-Roman barriculus, “barrel” then from the medieval Latin barriclus “small barrel”, is a unit of volume measurement mainly used today for crude oil and its derivatives. A barrel of oil is equivalent to 42 US gallons, or about 35 imperial gallons (precisely 34.9723) or 159 liters (precisely 158.987294928)2,3. This capacity is inherited from the liquid barrels used in Pechelbronn in Alsace from the second half of the 18th century4, then in Pennsylvania, where all the Alsatian extraction technologies were also taken up.
The abbreviation bbl stands for Blue Barrel. It comes from the blue color of 42 US gallon barrels, a system adopted at the end of the 19th century.
Outside Barrel Volume Formula United States, oil is also measured by mass, in tonnes, rather than by volume. Depending on its density, a ton of crude oil is between 7 and 9.3 barrels, the world average being around 7.6 barrels per ton. The tonne of oil should not be confused with the tonne of oil equivalent (toe), which is a measure of energy; the ratio between the toe and the barrel is a function not only of the density of the oil but also of its lower calorific value (NCV).
Today, the barrel is no more than a unit of measurement, oil being transported by pipeline, tank (tank truck, tank car or tanker) from its point of extraction to its point of refining.
The barrel of oil is both the most commonly used unit of measurement of volume to estimate oil reserves and also the one used as a reference to determine the price of crude oil. The types of crude oil used as standards for pricing are mainly US WTI and North Sea Brent.
On average: 1 barrel = 159 liters, one ton = 1,208 liters.
