Videos Games Come of Age

Video games are on the rise. Video games are the latest form of entertainment that has gained a lot of popularity and have finally reached the same level of acceptance as films.



It's an inevitable side effect of commercial success. In the first 24 hours following its release this month, Modern Warfare 3, the most recent release within the Call of Duty franchise, set sales records, making more than $US400 million in US and Britain alone.



Gaming has officially arrived and the industry is expanding rapidly. Cinema has a long track record of innovation and improvement but it has slowed in recent years. Gaming however, is always evolving.



Every year expectations are surpassed and new standards set. It's an exciting time to be a gamer.



The gaming landscape is complex however three companies determine the direction of the game: Microsoft, with its Xbox 360; Sony, with the PlayStation 3; and Nintendo with the Wii and DS.



There has always been a competition particularly between Microsoft and Sony as they try to compete in the same market. Just watch the other big publishers scramble to catch up when a lucrative idea is revealed.



The best illustration of this is Nintendo's Wii, the motion-control-based console. Nintendo hit an untapped nerve with Wii.



It did away with the processing power of other consoles to take advantage of a more refined motion control system and a stunning design. It was created for casual gamers.



Microsoft and Sony quickly followed suit with the Kinect and PlayStation Move respectively. Although the peripherals of both were well-loved but neither of them could replicate the incredible success of the Wii.



The indie developer is an important player in the ongoing battle with the gaming Goliaths. While there was no market for small, self-published games in the past, the rise of the internet and digital download platforms like Steam, and the advent of independent developers has allowed them to come back.



Indie games can be a boon to an industry that is easily tempted into rehashing sequels and sitting back and savoring the success.

Now with the creativity and budgets that allow experimentation, innovative downloadable games such as Minecraft (which recently sold more than 4 million units) finally have a platform that can support them.



With Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network now selling these games, developers of the future have a a chance to show their projects to a far wider audience and to encourage innovation in the industry.



The future isn't certain. Virtual reality has been a goal for a long time and 3D gaming headsets, though not as well-known as a 2D TV, do exist.



The growth of independent developers could signal a return to basic principles and the growth of games that are social media-based like FarmVille is not slowing down. It is likely that Microsoft and Sony are developing sequels for their popular consoles and who knows what it might bring?



Gaming is going to be around for a while It's a fact. Gaming is no longer the domain of greasy shut-ins. It will only improve.
