Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be fun but it can get old-fashioned after a while. Mojang is able to add new features to the game, but you don't have to wait for them to do so. This can help alleviate the boredom that your server experiences. This is where plugins be able to help.



The plugins are software for servers that adds features to a server. You don't need to make changes on the client side like mods. There are thousands of plugins available on the internet, so it's nearly impossible to find what you need or want.



In order to install plugins, your server has to be running either Spigot or Paper as the server version. Both can accept plugins from the Bukkit and Spigot websites. Find our guide here on how to change the server version.





How to Install Plugins Through the Plugin List

Apex Hosting has a great range of plugins from Spigot and Bukkit that can be integrated directly into your panel. This is the easiest way to install plugins on Java servers.



1. Log into your Apex Hosting Panel to select the server you would like to install the plugins.


2. The left side of the panel will display the Plugin List.


3. You can select to use Spigot or Bukkit as your source. The only difference could be the results you get. Both sources of plugins should work on the server.


4. You can search by name or by category for plugins. Click on the plugin you want to install once you've found it.





5. Now at the top of the page, verify that there is a compatible version for your server's version. e.g. If your server is running Paper 1.16.5 you should make sure there is a version that states compatibility with 1.16.


6. Once you've verified that the version you are using is compatible, you can choose it from the Version dropdown menu. Then, click the Install button to the right. Check your server console to confirm that the process is completed.





7. After the process is completed, be sure to restart your server for the plugin to load.







How to Install Plugins using FTP

Sometimes, the list of plugins may not have the plugin you are looking for. In that case you might need to search online for a direct download of a plugin Jar file. There are several popular places to download plugins, such as the SpigotMC website as well as the Dev Bukkit website, and sometimes , from the github pages of the developers. The best method of searching for the plugin online is to just search for the name or keywords.



1. You can download the plugin jar file from the internet.





2. Go to the FTP File Access tab on your panel, and then sign in.


3. After you have logged in, locate and click on the folder for plugins.

4. Once you're in the plugins folder, click upload to your left , and drag your Jar file.





5. When the file is 100% upload, you can return to your main panel.


6. Restart the server in order to let the plugin load.







Common Problems


Plugins not loading:




Sometimes, after restarting the server, the plugins may not load. You can verify whether a plugin has been loaded by running /plugins inside the game. If it's green, then it's likely to be loaded. If it is not in the list or red , then there may be an issue. Verify that the plugin is compatible to your server version. Also, go to the page for the plugin to make sure it doesn't have any dependency plugins. Sometimes, if you restart the server and observe the console output, it could reveal exactly what the error is or what plugin is not working to make it work.




Plugin List Failure:




If you are trying to download a plugin from the Plugin List on your panel and it is giving you errors, for example it might be stating that the plugin is not downloading properly, this would generally indicate an issue with the source site of the plugin. If this happens, we recommend that you install the plugin on your server following the FTP section of this guide.




No plugins folder:




If you try to manually install plugins to your server but you are unable to find the plugins folder, it is likely that your server isn't able to allow plugins. Perhaps you've forgotten about restarting after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Make sure your server is compatible by checking the selected version in the Jar File dropdown on your panel. Certain versions that are compatible include: Spigot, Paper, Magma, Thermos, and Cauldron.
