Work
This week I was able to get back on track after the holiday break. We're upgrading our database versions and will switch over next week. Also, we looked at an ADR (architecture decisions record) for email notifications.
Not everyone on the team is back yet, so it was still an uncharacteristically slow week.
Books
This week, I read:
The Centauri Device by M. John Harrison
This book is an excellent example of why I love the S. F. Masterworks series. It was a good read, but a bit confusing in parts (or perhaps I was tired at the time) but definitely enjoyable and had some neat ideas (like the space anarchists, with their captured alien spaceships). The wikipedia article reveals that this book revolutionized Space Opera by turning the old tropes upside down!
Now I know I can look back on other books I've read and observe their influence. Now I know where the ideas originated from.
Gaming
This week I bought Dyson Sphere Program. I'd been aware of it for a while, but hadn't felt the urge to try it out and this week I felt the urge.
I've sunk 30 hours into it over four days. It's really addictive and fun. It's like solving a puzzle. Twitsoc If you get it right, it's a satisfying way to create small and quick assembly lines. Add to that the slight difficulty of wanting to build beautiful factories, but working against the grid of a square on a circle (so as you move toward the poles, the gridlines shift), and that adds an extra difficulty.
I'm not even close to producing the dyson sphere. The components aren't working. I keep running out of oil due to the fact that I'm not burning hydrogen quickly enough. The conveyor belts get clogged up and stop the refineries.
It's also a lot of fun.
Miscellaneous
This week I set up fail2ban and an IP blocklist on my VPN. This was easy thanks to NixOS which I am now have a slightly better firewall.
IP blocking isn't great because it's easy to bypass however, there's a particular IP that is constantly trying to connect to my (whitelisted) Minecraft server, and seeing them in the logs several times per day was becoming annoying.
