Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from members of the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

We are updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more detailed guidance on new technologies. However, we wanted to express our opinion that integrations of NFT with Minecraft are not something we'd like to support or allow. Let's look at it more closely.

What is an NFT?

An NFT is an unique, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain and typically purchased using cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any type of digital asset such as an MPEG or a GIF however, the most commonly used use case today is digital art like JPEGs. The purchase of an NFT is a token that identifies the owner of the original digital file. Yet, with any digital file, that file can be moved, copied, or even deleted. NFTs and Blockchain have been associated with speculation. This is where prices can rise rapidly and, as we have observed, can drop quickly.

How will this affect me?

We strongly recommend that you read the following guidelines if you are a player or creator involved in the trading, buying, or selling of NFTs that use Minecraft (like worlds and skins). If you don't, these changes will not impact your game.

Our NFT POLICY AND MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how a server owner may charge for access and how everyone should have the same access to features. We have these rules in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone has access to the same content. NFTs are able to create scarcity and exclusion models that are not in line with our guidelines and the purpose and spirit of Minecraft.

Blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client or server applications. IQ BALIR Additionally, blockchain technology cannot be integrated into Minecraft in-game content , such as skins, worlds, and other items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset. Our reasons are as follows.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain could be integrated with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs by performing activities on servers, or by earning Minecraft NFT rewards for doing activities outside the game.

Each of these applications of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership built on scarcity and exclusion which is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing with one another. NFTs don't include all of our players and create a conflict between the haves and the not-so-haves. NFTs encourage profiteering and speculative pricing which we believe is incompatible with long-term joy and success for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being reliable and could cost the customers who buy them. Third-party NFT implementations could also be dependent on blockchain technology. They may need an asset manager, who could disappear without notice. There have also instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently price increases. We understand the inherent value of creativity within our game and strive to create a marketplace where those values are recognized.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs for any in-game content, including skins, worlds, items, or other mods. We will also be paying close attention to the way blockchain technology develops in the future to ensure that the above principles are not violated and determine if it will allow for more secure experiences or other inclusive and practical gaming applications. However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment.

We will be giving you more information in the near future. You can read our guidelines here however, in the meantime, we'll have more to share with you. Stay tuned!
