What is Return to Player (RTP), and Hit Frequency mean?

Return to Player (RTP) and Hit Frequency: What do These Define?

RETURN TO PLAYER (RTP)

Return to Player (RTP) is the term used by casinos to define the percentage of all the wagered money that a slot machine pays back to players over the course of. If you place 100 bets of $1 on a machine with a RTP of 90 percent, you can be expecting to win around 90 dollars in winnings. RTP and the house edge can be calculated over a long period of time. Almost anything can happen in the near term (see the section on Short-Term Volatility and Long Term Predictability) Therefore, you should only bet on money you're willing to risk.

RTP is the other side of the house advantage as you may have observed. If return to player percentage has a percentage advantage in house value, the average RTP is 80%, meaning that over time , the machine will keep about 20% of all money bet and will return the rest to the players who win.

Hit Frequency

Hit frequency is the name used by casinos to describe the frequency with which machines stop when it is hit by an enticing combination. For example, if a machine has a hit rate of 8per cent, it means that it will stop upon a winning combo about 8percent of the time. To not be missed, most VLTs and slot machines offer players to bet on several lines at the same time. One player could get up to three winning combinations in just one spin. There may also be many losing combinations. Although it could appear as if an individual is winning more often than they normally do, the number of losing combinations in the course of time will be greater.

There's a huge variety of hit frequencies that can be found between slot machines and VLTs. While certain slots might have a rate of just 3%, other slots such as video poker could have a hit rate of almost 45 percent. While the hit rate of video poker may seem appealing however, remember that almost half of these "hits" result in the player winning his initial bet. Although a machine with an average hit rate of 3 percent may not sound appealing, it may give players the chance to win a huge jackpot. (Machines with huge progressive jackpots typically have a lower frequency of hitting however they can offer higher jackpots.)

Low hit frequency games are frequently viewed as tight by players due to the small amount of wins. High hit frequency games are sometimes viewed as loose , due to only a few wins.

Remember, hit frequency is the average number of times a winning combination is seen. "Return to the player" is the amount or what percentage of all money placed on the table that a machine will bring back over time.
