How do you Ensure that your Blog is to Crash

If you host your site on your own (or have any other service that is affected by the number of visitors) There's a high chance that we'll destroy it.

This is called the Slashdot Effect, which happens when a huge site overwhelms a smaller site with traffic. Even Matticus who can handle a lot of hits, has been crashing this year due to WoW.com links, which is what inspired the name of this article in a backchannel discussion.

To take the words of Arnold Toynbee, we are an enormous, friendly dog in a tiny room. We do our best to smash your server every time we see something we like (.... So , before you ask us for a link consider taking a hard look at the amount of traffic you're able to handle. Visitors won't remember to visit your site in the event of a spike. They'll click and get the site error.

Your traffic may not rise as much depending on the subject. We do apologize if you get linked on a date that Blizzard issues patch notes, or any other day.

The most effective way to make us /facepalm is to leap up and down and yell that you're not linked.

There are several reasons why we won't connect you, even if you've sent in a request:

Your words might not be relevant to the article we are working on.

Your article could be relevant to an article that was published recently or one in the queue that is yet to be written.

Most of the time, we're overwhelmed and a writer who could've utilized your link didn't notice it.

Your website is littered with grammar and spelling mistakes that would be annoying to our commenters.

We are not interested in your website due to its sexual images, cussing, or other profane content.

A note from me A personal note: If you've ever been a victim to another blogger and I find out that you did, you will not receive a link from us.

There is the chance that your blog post falls within one of these categories. Before you send us an email or comment, make sure to check your site. Check to make sure there aren't any pictures of women wearing shabby clothing on your sidebars, and that your post doesn't make an English teacher scream. If not, then #3 is most likely. SERVERLIST101 Just send us another link, but with an accompanying note that accuses us of hating us. We're not enthusiastic about linking people with this sense of entitlement.

Since we receive so many submissions that are nothing more than an email, your post will stand out if include a short blurb on what your post is about or if you think a particular columnist in your class could benefit from it. We want to share excellent posts! Don't make it time-consuming for us to figure out the content of your post!

The second easiest method to make us smile is to jump up and down howling that you were linked.

We don't want to be harassed. If you put it online and you post it on the internet, then what you wrote isn't private opinion.

We connect people because we think they've written something intriguing or cool, and not to put them in trouble. However, we're not clairvoyant and don't know if what you wrote is going to get you in trouble. A lot of people on the WoW.com team are members of social sites that permit users to "lock" posts to other members of the community. If a post is locked by the author, we interpret it to mean it's not a fair game for a link. If a post doesn't get locked, it's available to anyone who is a member of the community whether they're a member or not. And if you really don't want something to be linked but you're posting on a publicly or semi-public site, speak to your community members about what you post and what you do not want publicized. 99% of the time it was another person in the community who shared it with us because they thought it was cool and we agreed.

Bottom line: don't post anything on the internet that you wouldn't want your mother reading.

Don't be alarmed If traffic is slowing down.

The websites eventually develop patterns of traffic that reflect their true audience. Blogs written by individuals typically cover a specific aspect of one class or even a single class, since it's difficult and time-consuming to write fluently about several classes. However, this does restrict the potential audience for your blog. If you write about, for instance, Holy Paladins, then Affliction Warlocks won't visit your blog via the route of a Google hit, or be interested in guides that you write. It's not personal - they're just not part your target audience. Your traffic will not always look like a steadily growing squiggly line in graphs. If you create good content to help people gain access to and comprehend high-quality information, and continue to build a great archive, don't worry about your numbers. You're doing your job.

Be patient.

Rome was not built in a day and you're unlikely to go from a few pageviews/day to 50K in a month or two months, or even 6 months. Keep going keep going, we're here to help you.
