Do you miss the initial high-energy days of World of Warcraft, before endless changes transformed it into a different beast? It's not just you. Hundreds of thousands of players played Nostalrius, an open-source server, until Blizzard shut the server in April because of intellectual property issues. The game studio won't slack off your cries. It's telling WoW fans that it's thought about operating its own "pristine" servers, without the boosts and tweaks that have been incorporated into the online game over time.
There aren't any plans for the future, so don't think that anything will happen in the near future. But, this isn't idle chatter. Blizzard is in talks with some Nostalrius operators. Discussions have gotten more lively tremendously since Nostalrius was shut down. SERVERLIST101 It is possible that a brand new official server will be developed, which shares at least a portion of the alternatives created by the community.
Although it might seem counterintuitive, Blizzard may consider a retro server even though it is insisting that you be equipped with the latest and most advanced features. There is some logic to an idea like this, though. WoW is now 12 years old and its subscriber base is declining. A throwback server might be a solution to avoid legal issues and prevent old fans from rescinding their subscriptions. It's not likely to lead to an influx of fans, but it could help to delay the inevitable.
