A British man hopes to break the world record for the longest-running game of Minecraft.

Joe Kelly, of Cheltenham Joe Kelly, from Cheltenham, played the game for 35 hours, 35 minutes and 35 seconds, and raised PS1,800 for cancer research.

The current record, 24 hours 10 minutes, was set by Martin Fornleitner in Austria in 2011.

Minecraft is about creating structures using blocks, exploring new worlds, and fighting in battles.

The book has sold more than 54 million copies in the world.

Microsoft purchased Mojang the studio behind it for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) in the year 2000.

Mr Kelly, who owns a film company and is a voice actor, has played the game since it was launched in the year 2010. He usually plays for only a few hours a week.

He stated to BBC that it was possible to stay awake and alert without caffeine, and it wasn't a problem.

"There there were no stimulants other than for sugar and stubbornness."

Kelly who streamed the entire event live on YouTube, said that the stunt had taken its toll.

"My shoulders didn't hurt and my back didn't hurt - the worst thing was my fingers.

"They hurt so much just by holding a mouse and keyboard and being in a clenched position for such a long time.

"Every small break I took I was flexing my fingers."

Mr Kelly and Sarah Vallance, his girlfriend, are currently in the process to send evidence to Guinness World Records.

He is not planning to take a break from the game.

"I introduced my girlfriend to Minecraft and we play together," he said.

"It's something we enjoy doing together. I don't mind gaming."
