Well being Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation RF-EMF causes damage to DNA, increase the temperature of tissues and alter the blood brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively involved in discussions with EHS communities, medical specialists and researchers. ARPANSA will continue to review research on the health impacts of EMF radiation.

RF-EMF causes DNA damage

The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage and other negative health consequences. EMFs can affect the intracellular ionic levels that are vital to maintain the electrochemical balance of cells. It can also disrupt cell homeostasis, resulting to DNA destruction. Furthermore exposure to EMFs is also associated with an increase in the production of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been linked with alterations in the male germ cell's development. This involves the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa, aswell as functional maturation as the spermatozoa move across the epididymis. To study the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to male germ cell development A specially designed waveguide machine was designed for the purpose of exposing unrestrained mice to RF-EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF EME caused oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after a week of treatment, and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Despite this, the radiation emitted by RF-EMF isn't yet classified as a cancer-causing agent. However, several studies have found that RF-EMF exposure can impair DNA health in variety of cell lines. In one such study researchers were exposed Vero cells to an EMF at 100 Hz over 45 minutes. They assessed DNA damage for within 48 hours of exposure to determine whether the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues
Although the effects of RF-EMF are typically considered as thermal in nature, a few studies have shown that non-thermal effects are also evident. These effects may account for some of the unresolved observations in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to look at the non-thermal aspects when conducting an extensive review.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF could occur at the cell membrane. This is an area where research has been thoroughly investigated. In particular, the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes is being studied. The current understanding is that RF-EMF energy that exceeds 1 MHz is transferred to the tissue through dielectric as well as the dissipation of ions. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy transferred to tissues could be up to 200 kV/m.

The electrical properties of tissues are regulated by the composition and distribution of water molecules, ions and other molecules in the body. This determines how absorbent EMR RF is by various tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more EMR field and produce more of an effect. This is why the degree of heat generated by tissue is not constant from outside to inside the body, but occurs in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissue is less susceptible to RF heating than other tissues, because they are not as water-based. content.

The intensity of penetration of the electromagnetic field depends on the strength and frequency that the electromagnetic field has. Muscle tissue absorbs more field energies than the other tissue and converts it to heat more efficiently. Typically, the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured in millimeters (mm). But, the higher the frequency, the shallower the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have found that RF-EMF could disrupt the blood-brain barrier, altering sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. Furthermore, the effects on the effects of EMF on brain activity have been linked to neurodegenerative disorders. For wi fi sickness , EMF from mobile phones can alter electroencephalogram activity as well as sleep patterns, as well as the activities of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF EMF in brain cells. They also studied the effects of ELF EMF on nervous system. Although the cellular mechanisms involved are not completely known, there is a clear association between ELF-EMF exposure and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. Fortunately, there are some known methods for regenerating myelin within the brain.

Researchers have discovered that exposure to 900 millimeters EMF increased the permeability of the BBB and also increased the symptoms of neuronal damage in rodents. They also observed increased exovasation of albumin into neurons. Further, they found the following: after 30 mins of 900 MHz exposure 99mTc-MIBI accelerated its permeation to the cerebral cortex. But, this effect did not occur when using Evans blue-based injections.

Despite these findings, RF EMF does not have a clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. Evidence suggests that non-thermal EMF exposure can increase erythrocyte membrane permeability. This could alter the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain is also linked to an increase in the permeability of BBB.
