Well being Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damage to DNA, heat up of tissues, and disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real and ARPANSA is active in collaborating in discussions with EHS group, the medical specialists and researchers. ARPANSA will continue review research on the health effects caused by EMF radiation.

RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
Exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage, as well as other negative health adverse effects. EMFs can affect the intracellular ionic levels that are crucial to maintain the electrochemical balance of cells. This can disrupt cell homeostasis, resulting to DNA destruction. Moreover, exposure to EMFs can cause the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been linked with alterations in the development of male germ cells. This involves the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa, aswell functional maturation when the spermatozoa travel across the epididymis. To study the effect of RF-EMF exposure on male germ cells, a specially-built waveguide machine was constructed for the purpose of exposing mice without restriction to RF-EMF in the range of 2.2 W/kg.

In a recent study, researchers have discovered that exposure to RF EME caused oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after a week of treatment, and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

However, the RF-EMF radiation has not yet been considered to be a carcinogen. But, several studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage the integrity of DNA in variety of cell lines. In one of these studies, scientists exposed Vero cells with an EMF at 100 Hz over 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
While the effects of RF EMF are generally believed to have thermal origins, a few studies have revealed that non-thermal influences are also evident. These effects may account for some of the unresolved issues in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to consider the non-thermal effects when conducting an extensive review.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF may occur at the cell membrane. This is an area of research that has been thoroughly studied. In particular the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been investigated. Current understanding suggests that energy from RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transferred to tissue via dielectric and ionic dissipation. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy transferred to the tissue could be as high as 200 kV/m.

The electrical properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules and other molecules in the body. This determines how absorbent RF EMR is by different tissues. Organs with greater conductivity are likely to absorb more field, and thus cause more of an impact. This is why the level of heat generated by tissue is not constant as it moves from the exterior to and is only noticeable in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissues are less susceptible to heating by RF than other tissues because they are low in water content.

The extent of penetration of electromagnetic fields depends on the strength and frequency of field. Muscle tissue absorbs more energy than other tissues, and converts it to heat more effectively. Usually the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured as millimeters (mm). However, the higher the frequency, the shallower the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF could disrupt the blood-brain barrier change sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Additionally the impacts of EMF on brain activity are linked to neurodegenerative diseases. For example, EMF from mobile phones can affect electroencephalogram activity and sleep patterns, as well as the activity of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at the Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure in brain cells. They also looked at the effects of ELF EMF on the nervous system. While the mechanisms of the cell that are involved aren't fully comprehended however, there is an obvious relationship between exposure to ELF EMF and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are known methods for regenerating myelin within the brain.

Researchers have found that exposure to frequencies of 900 Mhz EMF increased the permeability of the BBB and also increased the symptoms of neuronal damage in rats. wi fi sickness observed increased exovasation of neuronal albumin. Further, they found in 30 minutes exposure at 900 MHz 99mTcMIBI increased its diffusion into the brain. But this effect didn't occur with Evans blue injections.

However, RF-EMF is not able to provide a definitive mechanism for disrupting the BBB. The evidence suggests that nonthermal EMF exposure can increase erythrocyte membrane permeability. This could alter the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Moreover, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain is also connected to an increase in the permeability of the BBB.
