Growing Plants in Minecraft
Farmland
Farmland is required for a variety of plant species. Farmland is created by working on dirt or grass blocks with hoes. Farmland looks similar to dirt, but the block isn't as tall.
Farmland left unplanted for too long or is swarmed upon (by mobs, players) will return to dirt.
Irrigation
Farmland within 4 blocks of water will become irrigated (or "hydrated". Most crops are better off when the land is irrigated and dry.
Lighting
Light is essential for most crops to grow. DESIGN If you plant them outside they will be growing during the day, however if you add more lighting, they will also grow in the evening too.
You must have artificial lighting to grow your crops indoors and underground.
Bone Meal
Many crops can be fertilized with Bone Meal to help them grow faster. Bone Meal is composed of skeleton bones and when you right click to apply it to your plant, there is a chance that it will start growing.
Wheat
Wheat is the most common crop that you will grow.
Seeds
The first thing you need is
seeds
- you can get these by breaking up blocks of long grass. You will also get more seeds when you harvest your wheat. So, you only need only a few seeds in order to start.
The first time you plant your crop
First make a hoe:
...and make sure to include water. Plant your seeds and then wait for them to grow. Set up a torch near your plants so they continue to grow at night and can be ready for harvest sooner.
This is how your first wheat farm will appear.
Make Bone Meal if you have bones and fertilize your crops. Two applications are usually enough to ripen your wheat completely. If not, you'll need to wait.
It's ready when it turns golden:
When you harvest your wheat, you'll get the wheat item (for cooking or for feeding to cows and sheep) and more seeds than you started with. You'll be able plant a bigger farm the next time!
Larger fields
One block of water can provide irrigation to 80 blocks of agricultural land:
TIP:place an lily pad over the water to stop you from falling in when you harvest or replant your wheat.
TIP: you can harvest wheat more quickly by pouring water on your field. However, replanting has to be done block-by-block.
Melons and pumpkins
Melons are an excellent food source, and are used in brewing potions. They are not edible, but can be used as a helmet for protection against Endermen. You can also make Jack-o'-Lanterns using pumpkins. This lighting fixture is decorative and is used to create snow golems.
Seeds
Pumpkin seeds and melon seeds are both found in chests in dungeons and abandoned mine shafts. Pumpkins can also sometimes be grown wild, and melon seeds may be found in NPC villager.
You can make pumpkin and melon seeds using melon slices or pumpkins.
Planting
Seeds must be planted on
Farmland
The best way to do this is to keep them that they are irrigated. The plant will transform into a melons or pumpkin plant in between 10 and 30 minutes. Once the plant is mature and mature, the pumpkin or melon will be seen next to it on a farmland or dirt block.
Accelerate the growth of plants by applying bonemeal. - while the seed must be planted on farmland, fruit will be seen on farmland, dirt or grass. After harvesting, the plant will produce another fruit every 1-30 minutes. The plant is able to have one fruit at a time. An axe is the best tool for harvesting pumpkins, but anything is acceptable for melons.
Farm Layouts
There are many ways to lay out farms. Here are two of them:
Lily Pads
Placing lily pads over the top of any water in your farm will stop slices of melon from falling into the water.
Carrots and Potatoes
Zombies may drop carrots and potatoes However, they are also found at NPC villages.
Growing them is like growing wheat, except there aren't seeds. Place carrots and potatoes in the fields. If you can, make sure to keep them hydrated. Wait. The process can be speeded up by using bonemeal. You will reap more benefits from your crop when you harvest them.
Both potatoes and carrots can be consumed raw. However, it's best to bake the potatoes before eating them.
Beetroot
Beetroot is another crop that is grown in the villages. When you harvest beetroot, you will receive both Beetroot and Beetroot Seeds, which can be planted.
Beetroot can be eaten raw or made into Beetroot Soup. You can also make Rose Red dye from it.
Cocoa Beans
Cocoa beans can be found in dungeon chests or growing on trees in the forest. You can grow them by placing them on the side of a Jungle Wood log. Just like other plants, they grow through several stages and, when they are ripe, you can harvest the beans.
Nether Wart
Nether Wart is only available only in Nether Fortresses. However, once you have some Nether Wart, you can plant it anywhere. It can be planted in Soul Sand and harvested once it's fully mature.
It doesn't need light, but it can't be accelerated by bone meal. You can only grow it in soulsand, not regular dirt.
