Health and fitness Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation from RF-EMF can cause DNA damage, tissue heating and alter the blood brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively engaged with the EHS group, the medical professionals as well as researchers. ARPANSA will continue to review research on the health impacts of EMF radiation.

RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
Exposed to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can cause DNA damage, as well as other negative health consequences. EMFs can disrupt intracellular ionic concentrations, which are vital to maintain the balance of electrochemical activity in cells. It can also alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting to DNA destruction. Moreover exposure to EMFs can also trigger the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been linked to changes in the male germ cell's development. This results in the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa as well functional maturation when the spermatozoa travel throughout the epididymis. To study the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to the development of male germ cells, a specially-built waveguide machine was constructed for the exposure of mice that were not restrained to RF-EME in the range of 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME caused an oxidative DNA injury in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% after one week of treatment and by 23 percent after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Although the radiation emitted by RF-EMF isn't yet considered to be a carcinogen. But, several studies have shown that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA health in range of cell varieties. In one such study researchers exposed Vero cells to an EMF of 100 Hz for about 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues
Although the effects of RF-EMF are usually believed to have thermal origins, some studies have shown that non-thermal influences are also evident. These factors could be responsible for some of the unresolved issues in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to look at the non-thermal aspects when conducting an extensive review.

The non-thermal effects that RF-EMF can have may be felt at the cell's membrane. This is an area where research has been extensively studied. In particular, the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes is being studied. It is believed that energy from RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transferred to the tissue through dielectric as well as ionic dissipation. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy that is transferred to the tissue could be as high as 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules, and other molecules in the body. This determines how absorbent EMR RF is by various tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more of the field and cause more of an effect. This is the reason why the amount of tissue heating doesn't increase continuously from outside to inside the body and is only noticeable in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue is less susceptible to heating by RF than other tissues, because they are not as water-based. content.

The intensity of penetration of electromagnetic fields is determined by the strength and frequency that the electromagnetic field has. Muscle tissue is more able to absorb field energies than the other tissue and converts it to heat more effectively. Usually, the depth of penetration for RF EMF is determined by millimeters (mm). However, the greater the frequency, the deeper the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier change sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Additionally the impacts on the effects of EMF affect brain function are linked to neurodegenerative disorders. For 5g exposure symptoms , EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, in addition to the activities of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at the Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure in brain cells. They also studied what effects ELF EMFs on the brain system. Though the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully understood, there is a clear relationship between exposure to ELF EMF and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. Fortunately, there are some tested methods to regenerate myelin in the brain.

Researchers have observed that exposure to the frequency of 900 MHz EMF caused a rise in the permeability of BBB and increased symptoms of neuronal damage in rats. They also observed increased extravasation of albumin into neurons. Further, they found the following: after 30 mins of 900 MHz exposure, 99mTc-MIBI increased its penetration to the cerebral cortex. But this effect didn't happen with Evans blue injections.

Despite these findings, RF EMF has no clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure increases erythrocyte membrane permeability, which may affect the BBB and increase calcium ion efflux. Additionally, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain is also associated with an increase in the permeability and permeability of the BBB.
