Compasses that are real don't point to your spawn point on Earth. They only. Magnetic compasses were first developed during China's Han Dynasty in around 200BC for fortune-telling purposes. They were constructed from lodestone, which is naturally magnetic iron ore. It took them 800 years to discover that they could also be used for navigation. The first recorded use of a compass in the Western and Islamic world was not until 1190.
Then, they got popular and fast. They were useful in aiding in the direction of travel in winter as there was no visible the sun or constellations. This enabled sailors to take safer and more precise journeys.
