Effective self-study methods for Japanese
Don't worry if you are a new Japanese learner and are wondering: can I really self-study Japanese?, you are not alone. My first reaction was that it was really insane to think anyone could learn one of the hardest languages without any assistance from teachers.

As a college graduate, I challenged myself with this tough goal, which I was able to achieve (in some way). Blog For Pet Lover has been passed after 1 year of full-time self-study, but I realized it wasn't THAT big of an achievement. The details about that will come later, but I first want to tell you exactly how I learned Japanese all by myself and passed the JLPT N2 with 97 / 180 (99 is the passing mark).

A lot of people think that learning the hiragana and katakana charts is the hard part, but actually learning the 2000 Kanji characters is probably the most challenging part. Due to headaches, I decided to skip learning the Kanji for a while in the first month of my journal. As I thought about it, why don't Japanese people only use hiragana in their writing system like Koreans do? There would be much less hassle for everyone if that was done. Although I originally hated Kanji, I later got hooked on it.

The famous book Remembering the Kanji by Heisig may be familiar to you. Those who want to learn the Kanji faster and more easily should get this book. The book helps you remember the characters by encouraging you to create a story or image for each one. In spite of the fact that it cannot be guaranteed that this book will work for everyone or that you will become a Kanji expert after reading it, it certainly is the best book out there for learning Chinese characters.

It is unfortunate that this book doesn't provide on and kun readings for every character. We can easily learn to read the characters somewhere else, so the author wants to show us how to remember them the best. If you're a serious student, you shouldn't have much trouble searching for the on and kun reading for each character.

By writing as many sentences and short essays as you can, you will become familiar with writing the Kanji. The key to remembering a word is to repeat it in various sentences over and over until you finally remember it. Also, ask someone to correct your grammar mistakes for you by typing them into your computer.

They offer thousands of audio, video, and pdf lessons. This site probably has the most Japanese lessons. There are four categories of lessons: Absolute Beginner, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Seasons within each category contain 20+ lessons each. If you want to learn offline, you can download the pdf and mp3 files from the website.
