Well being Effects of EMF Radiation
RF-EMF radiation can cause DNA damage, tissue heating, and even disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real and ARPANSA is actively involved with the EHS community, medical experts as well as researchers. The agency will continue to study research related to the health effects caused by EMF radiation.

RF-EMF damages DNA
Exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage and other adverse health consequences. EMFs can alter the intracellular ionic concentrations that are crucial to maintain the balance of electrochemical activity in cells. This can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting to DNA damage. Additionally, exposure to EMFs can also trigger the production of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been linked to changes in male germ cell development. This involves the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa, aswell functioning maturation when the spermatozoa move across the epididymis. To investigate the effects of RF-EMF on the development of male germ cells A specially designed waveguide device was developed to expose unrestrained mice to RF-EMF in the range of 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME triggered the oxidation of DNA in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after an entire week of treatment and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Despite this it isn't yet recognized as a true carcinogen. However, several studies have revealed that exposure to RF-EMF can affect DNA integrity in a variety of cell lines. In one study researchers exposed Vero cells with an EMF of 100 Hz for about 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues

While the effects of RF-EMF are generally considered to have thermal origins, a few studies have revealed that non-thermal effects are also observed. These may be the reason for some of the unsolved issues in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

Effects that are not thermal from RF-EMF could occur at the cell membrane. This is an area where research has been thoroughly examined. In particular the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been investigated. It is believed that energy from RF-EMF higher than 1 MHz gets transferred into the tissues through dielectric and ionic dissipation. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy transfer to the tissue could be up to 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissues are controlled by the composition and distribution of water molecules, ions and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbed EMR RF is by various tissues. Organs with greater conductivity are likely to absorb more of the field and cause more of an impact. This is the reason the degree of heating in tissues does not increase steadily as it moves from the exterior to the body however, it is more prevalent in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissues are less prone to RF heating than other tissues because they are not as water-based. content.

The depth of the field's penetration depends on the frequency and strength that the electromagnetic field has. Muscle tissue absorbs more energies than the other tissue, and converts it into heat more effectively. Typically the penetration depth of RF-EMF is measured by millimeters (mm). The higher the frequency, the more shallow the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have found that RF EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier changing sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Furthermore the impacts that EMF affect brain function are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. For example, EMF from mobile phones can affect electroencephalogram activity and sleep patterns, in addition to the activities of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF EMF to brain cells. They also studied what effects ELF EMF on the nervous system. Though the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully understood, there is a clear association between ELF-EMF exposure and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are known methods to regenerate myelin inside the brain.

Researchers have observed that exposure to the frequency of 900 Mhz EMF enhanced the permeability of the BBB and increased signs of neuronal damage in rats. They also observed an increase in the release of neuronal albumin. Additionally, they observed in 30 minutes exposure at 900 MHz 99mTc-MIBI accelerated its permeation in the cortex. However this effect didn't occur with Evans blue injections.

However, RF-EMF does not have a clear method for disrupting the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which could influence the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Furthermore, emf exposure symptoms a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain has been connected to an increase in the permeability of the BBB.
