The Third Tab is for Building Materials

The interface for crafting tables in Java Edition.

Crafting is the process of creating tools, items, and blocks in Minecraft. Players can craft by moving items from their inventory to a grid of crafting and arranging them according to the recipe. A crafting table is able to access the 3x3 grid as well as the 2x2 grid for crafting. Items created in the 2x2 grid can be made at the crafting table.

2x2 Crafting grid (inventory)

3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)

Creative, Survival Adventure, Creative, and Spectator (Java Edition only) players always have access to the 2x2 crafting grid on their inventory screen. There are a few small crafting recipes that are possible to make that are less than 2x2. This includes wooden planks, crafting tables, sticks torches, and even some recipe that are not shaped. You can make items using the 3x3 grid. To accomplish this, you need to create a crafting board with 4 wooden planks and place it in the world. Then, press the use button while facing it. The interface will open with a 3x3 grid that players can use to create any crafting recipe in the game. You can also find every crafting recipe in the recipe book.

Certain recipes don't require ingredients be placed in a certain way on the grid for crafting. These are commonly known as recipes that are not shaped. For instance, players can craft a fermented spider eye by placing the ingredients anywhere within the grid. [note 1]

However most recipes require ingredients are placed in the right locations on the grid for crafting. These are often referred to as recipes that are shaped. Shaped recipes allow ingredients to be'moved either up or down, left, right, or both. They can also be flipped to the side. For instance, a 3x1 recipe, like bread, could be made using the top, middle or the bottom row of the 3x3 grid. However, it is not possible to make with the 2x2 grid as it must be three items wide. Likewise, bows can be made using strings that are placed on the left rather than on the right.

There are recipes that cannot not be replicated or moved in this manner. These are commonly known as fixed recipes. Banner recipes, for instance need that the dyes are placed in a particular way to achieve the desired pattern. *Bedrock Edition only. Fixed recipes can be added by data packs or mods.

Crafting is completely silent, in contrast to other in-game actions such as smelting, boiling, and enchanting.

Shapeless recipes are identified on this wiki by the arrows of a pair that are intertwined on the crafting table graphic. This symbol doesn't actually appear in the game. Recipe Book[]

The recipe book is a mechanic in Minecraft that acts as a catalog of recipes and also as a crafting reference. It lists every crafting recipe the player has attempted using the materials.

Crafting recipes are organized into several different categories, as follows:

- The first tab contains every unlocked recipe. The second tab includes weapons and armor, tools and other items. The third tab includes building materials. Forums The fourth tab includes food items and other products. The fifth tab is comprised of redstone materials. Recipe system[System for Recipes[

Recipes, including crafting recipes, can be customized by data packs in Java Edition or add-ons in Bedrock Edition. There are currently 379 crafting recipes as of 1.16.

Complete recipe list[]

Certain recipes can be animated to conserve space (requires JavaScript). This wiki categorizes recipes that are not shapeless with a pair of intertwined, connected arrows on its crafting table graphic. Fixed crafting recipes are marked with an exclamation mark. These symbols are not visible in the game.
