Minecraft shouldn't ever Feel Clingy, Mojang Says

Minecraft shouldn't ever be a clingy feeling, Mojang says

Mojang continues to pay attention to the success of other survival games.

Mojang asked me what the future of Minecraft was like prior to when the most recent Minecraft 1.19 (opens new tab) update was released. Agnes Larsson, game director and Nir "Ulraf” Vaknin developer, were not keen to discuss specific features for the next major upgrade. It's not surprising that they're likely to keep this for the next Minecraft Live showcase. Instead, we talked about how they're still learning from other crafting competitors and how they'd like to "keep the fun of Minecraft" for another 10 years or more.

Minecraft's launch of the alpha version in 2010 put crafting and survival on the map. There have been thousands of other games for crafting, many of which are also created with voxels, but Minecraft remains the benchmark for sandbox creativity. It's not difficult for Mojang to fall into a state of complacency after having worn the crown for many years, I can imagine that they would become solitary and source ideas only from its own developers and players.

Larsson and Vaknin both insisted that they wouldn't call Minecraft superior to the rest. (I would, though. I don't want to sound boastful, but it doesn't hurt. They do say they know what makes Minecraft unique and therefore can keep the uniqueness of Minecraft.

Larsson called it intrinsic motivation. "We should encourage and empower players to be imaginative in their own unique way," she said, "but never dictate, never force anything."

Vaknin agreed with the statement that Minecraft's success is due to encouraging players to be self-motivated "A many games are deviating from that because a lot of players are looking for more direction, and that's okay."

I've tried all blends of crafting games for survival throughout the years. Most recently it's been the viking crafting experience in Valheim that enticed me for a couple months, the session-based survival of Icarus for a couple weeks, and vampire crafting in V Rising for a couple days. Even Valheim, which I was consumed by for over 100 hours and helped to lobby for as our game of the year (opens in a new tab) in 2021 I haven't been able to keep coming back the way Minecraft has.

Vaknin declared that he's been keeping up with the competition. He was also interested in how food and hunger in Valheim work. It made me rethink my approach to food. In Minecraft, for example I was not allowed to skip food systems or treat all food items equally. He says, "I spend time thinking about that and thinking about whether there are any lessons to be learned from it."

Vaknin stated that V Rising has a very unique goal and boss tracking system. He also spoke about the necessity of tracking down bosses on the map to find them. "It reminded me of how you find the End stronghold in Minecraft with the eyes of the ender."

While Minecraft grows without having to follow trends, Vaknin hopes it won't ever chase its players .

"Minecraft is not clingy," was how he declared it in the following chat. Forums He likened it to the friendship of a friend who will be there for you, even the moment you decide to go elsewhere and come back months later.

Vaknin shared a common experience that is common in the Minecraft community: playing heavily for a few many years ago, then returning every year when the mood strikes. It's a strategy I've employed for years and one that Mojang is confident in cultivating.

"So many games you play can pull you into a bit too much and you're then unable to wait for to see it end. I love that Minecraft does not do that. It is so important to me that this is maintained."

"One thing recently added to our core values is that you play Minecraft because you want to, not because you feel pressured to," Larsson added.

As I begin to look ahead to the announcement of Minecraft version 1.20, it's good to know that the folks in charge are confident enough to keep up with the latest trends in survival and crafting without necessarily chasing them.
