The Game Developers Choice Awards

Minecraft is an open world video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later developed and published by Mojang. Minecraft's building and creative features let players create constructions from textured cubes within a procedurally generated 3D world. Other games in the game include exploration, resource collection crafting, combat, and exploration. There are several gameplay options available such as survival mode, in which the player has to gather resources to build a world and keep their health up and a creative mode in which players have unlimited resources to build with and also the ability to fly in an adventure mode, where players create custom maps by other players and a spectator mode where players can fly around and cut through blocks, however cannot place blocks. The PC version of the game is famous for its third-party mods which add new characters, items, and quests to the game.



The alpha version of the program was publicly released for PC on May 17 2009, and, after incremental updates, the complete version was released on November 18, 2011. A version for Android was released one month earlier, on October 7. Android version was released a month earlier, on October 7. A iOS version was released on November 17, 2011. Minecraft received five awards during the 2011 Game Developers Conference. It won the Game Developers Choice Awards Innovation Award, Best Downloadable Game Award and Best Debut Game Award. From the Independent Games Festival, it was awarded the Audience Award as well as the Seumas McNally grand prize. In 2012, Minecraft won the Golden Joystick Award for the most download-friendly Game. Over 70 million copies of Minecraft had been sold as of June 2015. This made it the most popular PC game, and the third highest-selling videogame. Microsoft announced on September 15, 2014 that it was going to purchase Mojang and the rights to the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5billion. The acquisition was completed on the 6th of November in 2014.
