Here are 12 rules for drastically increasing the quality of your discourse-some are specifically designed for arguments and others are general.
1. Watch Your Tone
Every productive conversation that I have had has been built on a calm and respectful tone. It amazes me how even an ounce of anger or resentment in someone's voice can completely derail any conversation and turn into a slam on the door and then (after some time) by a polite apology.
My mom would request my sister Anna to stop playing minecraft in a manner that instantly expressed my mom's hatred for video games and her disappointment that my sister was involved in activities that were so contrary to my mom's ideals. My mom's request would make my blood boil just because she was close enough. She would then approach me in complete confusion asking what she was thinking. Anna would respond by screaming a list of reasons why she wanted to be emancipated from the family. My mom would call me a magician and request Anna to do the exact same things but in a respectful, neutral tone. Anna would oblige (with some resistance, my miracles are only as good as the results).
