The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damage to DNA, heat up of tissues and even disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These are real-world effects, and ARPANSA is active in collaborating with the EHS community, medical professionals, and researchers. ARPANSA will continue study research related to the health impacts of EMF radiation.
RF-EMF causes DNA damage
Exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage, as well as other health consequences. EMFs can affect intracellular ionic concentrations, which are crucial to maintain the balance of electrochemical activity in cells. This can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting damages to the DNA. Additionally, exposure to EMFs can also trigger the production of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been linked with alterations in male germ cell development. This results in the differentiation of the germ cell into spermatozoa, aswell functioning maturation as spermatozoa pass across the epididymis. To study the effect of RF-EMF exposure on the development of male germ cells, a specially-built waveguide machine was designed to expose unrestrained mice to RF-EME with a dose of 2.2 W/kg.
In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME caused the oxidative DNA damage of spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% following an entire week of treatment and by 23 percent after five weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).
However, RF-EMF radiation is not yet considered to be a carcinogen. However, several studies have revealed that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA integrity in a range of cell types. In one such study, scientists exposed Vero cell lines to EMF of 100 Hz for about 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage within 48 hours of exposure to determine if the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.
The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
While the effects of RF EMF are usually thought to have thermal origins, some studies have shown that non-thermal effects may also be evident. These may be the reason for some of the unresolved observations in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. Therefore, it is important to look at the non-thermal aspects when conducting an exhaustive review.
The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF could occur at the cell membrane. This is an area where research has been thoroughly examined. Particularly the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been investigated. The current understanding is that energy from RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transmitted to the tissue through dielectric as well as Ionic dissipation. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy transfer to the tissue could be as high as 200 kV/m.
The electric properties of tissue are controlled in the form and quantity of water molecules and ions and other molecules within the body. This determines how well absorbed RF EMR is by different tissues. Organs with greater conductivity are likely to absorb more of the field, and thus cause more of an effect. This is why the level of tissue heating doesn't increase continuously as it moves from the exterior to however, it is more prevalent in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue are less susceptible to heating by RF as compared to other tissues, since they are not as water-based. content.
The depth of the field's penetration is determined by the strength and frequency of field. Muscle tissue is more able to absorb field energy than other tissues and converts it into heat more efficiently. Usually, the depth of penetration that RFEMF has is measured by millimeters (mm). However, the higher the frequency, the deeper the penetration.
RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier change sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. In emf sensitivity symptoms on the effects of EMF in brain activities have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases. For example, EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, and the activities of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.
Researchers from the Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF EMF in brain cells. They also looked at what effects ELF EMFs on the nervous system. Although the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully understood but there is a clear connection between exposure to ELF-EMF and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are known methods for regenerating myelin inside the brain.
Researchers have discovered that exposure to the frequency of 900 Mhz EMF enhanced the permeability of BBB and increased signs of neuronal damage in rodents. They also observed increased exovasation of neuronal albumin. Additionally, they observed the following: after 30 mins of exposure at 900 MHz 99mTc-MIBI accelerated its penetration in the cortex. However, this effect did not occur when using Evans blue-based injections.
Despite these findings, RF-EMF does not have a clear method for disrupting the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which could affect the BBB and also increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain has been associated with an increase in the permeability of BBB.
