Health Effects of EMF Radiation
RF-EMF radiation can cause damages to DNA and tissue, and can disrupt the blood-brain-barrier. These effects are real and ARPANSA is active in collaborating in discussions with EHS communities, medical professionals, and researchers. ARPANSA will continue to examine research regarding the health effects of EMF radiation.

RF-EMF causes DNA damage
The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) can cause DNA damage and other health consequences. EMFs can alter the intracellular ionic concentrations that are crucial to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. This can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting in DNA damage. Additionally exposure to EMFs is also linked to an increase in the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been associated with changes in male germ cells' development. This is due to the development of germ cells into spermatozoa as well functioning maturation when the spermatozoa travel through the epididymis. To study the effects of RF-EMF on male germ cell development, a specially-built waveguide machine was constructed to expose unrestrained mice to RF EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME triggered oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after an entire week of treatment and by 23 percent after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

However, RF-EMF radiation is not yet considered to be a carcinogen. But, numerous studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF can affect the integrity of DNA in range of cell varieties. In one such study researchers exposed Vero cells to an EMF of 100 Hz for about 45 minutes. They evaluated DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

RF-EMF causes tissue heating
While the effects of RF-EMF are usually thought to have thermal origins, a few studies have demonstrated that non-thermal effects are also present. These effects may account for certain of the unsolved findings in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. This is why it is crucial to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

Non-thermal effects from RF-EMF could be mediated by the cell membrane. This is a field where research has been thoroughly studied. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes is being studied. It is believed that energy from RF-EMF higher than 1 MHz is transmitted to tissues via dielectric dissipation and ionic discharge. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy transfer to tissues could be as high as 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbed EMR RF is by various tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more EMR field and produce more of an impact. This is the reason why the amount of tissue heating is not constant between the outside and inside the body and is only noticeable in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue is less susceptible to RF heating than other tissues, because they have a low water content.

The intensity of the field's electromagnetic energy is determined by the strength and frequency that the electromagnetic field has. Muscle tissue absorbs more radiation than most tissues and converts it into heat more effectively. Usually the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured by millimeters (mm). The higher the frequency, deeper the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have found that RF-EMF could disrupt the blood-brain barrier which can alter sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. In addition to this, the effects of EMF on brain activity are linked to neurodegenerative disorders. For example, EMF from mobile phones can alter electroencephalogram activity as well as sleep patterns, in addition to the activity of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers from the Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF EMF to brain cells. They also studied what effects ELF EMF on the brain system. Though the cellular mechanisms involved are not completely understood, there is a clear connection between exposure to ELF-EMF and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. There are, however, known methods to regenerate myelin inside the brain.

Researchers have found that exposure to frequencies of 900 millimeters EMF caused a rise in the permeability of BBB and raised signs of neuronal damage in rats. They also observed an increase in the release of neuronal albumin. Further, they found that after 30 minutes of exposure to 900 MHz, 99mTc-MIBI increased its penetration to the cerebral cortex. However, this effect did not occur with Evans blue-based injections.

Despite these findings, RF EMF does not have a clear method for disrupting the BBB. emf neurological symptoms suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which could alter the BBB and enhance the efflux of calcium ions. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain is also associated with an increase in the permeability and permeability of the BBB.
