Fortnite is trying to be more than just a videogame. This is the latest example of Fortnite bringing experiences to its gameplay. It hosted performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and three movies by Christopher Nolan last year.

The original concept of the metaverse was to be utilized in dystopian science fiction novels where virtual worlds offer an escape from the deteriorating society and were created for fictional characters, the technology industry has painted a more positive image of the concept. The idea is to create a world similar to the internet that users can explore and interact with each other via virtual avatars.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was very proud to introduce Fortnite as a metaverse event and as a "social event" when he was a witness in the prominent lawsuit against Apple which he filed earlier in the year. The lawsuit was brought against Apple over the commissions that the iPhone maker receives from developers of apps. Sweeney's argument was an effort to prove that it is more than an online game, and also to undermine Apple's assertion that it is not a monopoly in the sense that Fortnite players are able to play it on other devices other than iPhones and iPads.



Epic The app, on the other hand, sought to make itself appear as one of the millions of apps on Apple's App Store that are subject to Apple's strict restrictions and commissions on in-app purchases. (A decision in the case is waiting to be decided.)



Fortnite isn't the only well-known game to lean heavily on the concept of metaverse.



Roblox is one of the most prominent examples. It features games-within a-games made by users. In recent months, Roblox has expanded into concerts and TV shows. Minecraft, owned by Microsoft (MSFT) has also worked on expanding its own metaverse, with the group Reporters Without Borders recently creating an online library within the game featuring articles that have been censored all over the world.

Big Tech is also increasingly adopting the metaverse, as the word appearing nearly two dozen times during Facebook's latest earnings call. As it seeks to go beyond two-dimensional video calls, the social media company has been using virtual reality features and services for a long time.



For a variety of reasons, the metaverse's full-fledged development is likely to take years before it becomes feasible. However the gaming industry is leading the way.
