Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the popular video game that lets you build and creating monsters, allows you to integrate Ordnance Survey terrain data from Great Britain into your blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33,000,000 players have the ability to create worlds on top of accurate geographical landscapes that cover 224,000km (86,000 miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern at OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It is based on free OS OpenData products.

"We believe that we have created the largest Minecraft world ever created using real-world data," said Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager.

"The resulting map demonstrates the huge potential of Minecraft not only for geography and computer technology-related purposes in schools, but also for the wide range of OS OpenData applications."

Minecraft was developed by Swede Markus "Notch" Persson in 2009 It is a world made of cubes of various materials, like rock, sand and lava.

Players can collaborate in the construction of shelters, making things from the raw materials and fighting off a variety of monsters.
Freezing a moment

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are contained in the OS GB world.

Once the players have downloaded the map to Minecraft it is then possible to enter the 3D virtual world through OS's headquarters in Southampton and from there , they can recreate real-life features, such as Stonehenge or even imagined structures such as Hogwarts castle.

The OS map products OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap - combine to create a 3D model of the earth surface overlaid with features like water, woodland and roads.

You can design your own structures and structures on top.

As OS is the UK's primary national mapping authority, its data includes the mainland and surrounding islands but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
