One of the many causes for the Spanish and American war was the U.S's ongoing support for Cuban and Filipinos against Spanish rule, one of the main reasons the U.S was supporting Cubans independence was because they were highly against European colonialism over the western hemisphere.

Another cause for the Spanish and American war was because of the need to protect business interests in Cuba. The need for business interests in Cuba, such as expansion of trading ability, porting of goods, and sugar mills in Cuba were all interests that the U.S could highly profit off of which is why the U.S wanted to protect such interests.

Another cause for the Spanish and American war was because of the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine. The battleship sank in the Havana Harbor, killing around 260 men, this disaster was blamed on Spain which not only gave reason for the U.S to declare war upon Spain, but to give further thought on the idea of what was to gain from it.
