Minecraft will Require a microsoft Account to Play in 2022.

Minecraft players are able to play without a Microsoft account for the past six years that the company has owned the game, however, this will be changed in 2021, the official Minecraft blog announced yesterday. Players who own the original version of Minecraft and don't change their accounts to a Microsoft account will be unable to play.

Since its release in 2011 on consoles the game is available in two separate versions. The first version of Minecraft: Java Edition had Mojang accounts. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition was the title of the console and Windows Store version of the game. The accounts will remain the same after this change, however crossplay isn't yet possible. You cannot play with your friends on a different version of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that players who migrate from Mojang accounts will not lose any data. The new accounts will feature two factor authentication (2FA), and other security features that were previously available in the Bedrock Edition. These include parental controls, as well as the ability block chats and invites. This is a problem for younger players who use multiplayer servers.

In the coming months players will be notified in batches with instructions on how to transfer. They will also receive an additional notification on your profile page when you can create a new account. Mojang also produced a video explaining the switch and to address player complaints.

Anyone concerned should be aware that the video is reassuring regarding the compatibility between user-generated and user-generated content (and multiplayer), but it also makes a lot of assumptions about how positive you'll feel. The video also doesn't mention something that might bother players usernames for Java Edition could change.
P2P SYSTEMS

In support articles addressing the change, Mojang is clear that your username won't be affected in game, however if someone is already using your name as a Gamertag you'll need to accept the addition of a suffix at the end (e.g. minecraftfan #1734) or select a new one to log-in with. Names that aren't in line with Microsoft's safety standards may need to be changed. Due to the fact that there are fewer names available the suffix could be more prevalent, particularly considering how long it took for console players to obtain them.

Mojang claims it was easier to make use of Microsoft accounts to provide these new features rather than re-inventing them from scratch, but if they're so important to provide in the first place and why did they take this time to get there? Players have requested two-factor authentication for as long as the game has offered an opportunity to purchase and sell content. That's three years, if you're counting. It's an excellent reason to change the system. However, it wasn't until this point. I'm not able to help but wonder if this is an issue Microsoft forced, simplifying the management of their biggest game before the release of next-generation consoles.

While not as explosive as Facebook's decision to make Facebook accounts for the use of Oculus headsets, Minecraft is still one of the most popular games in the world and gamers will now have to make a decision in order to continue to play.

Correction An earlier version of this article stated that usernames had to change if the exact name was previously used as Gamertag. In the wake of an update to Microsoft's account system in the year 2000, identical names are given suffixes that distinguish them from one other , rather than forcing users to change to a new username. We are very sorry for this mistake.
